Photography Question

Kyle Gehmlich

Selling a single photo

Hi everyone,
I have a photo from a little over a year ago that several people have told me I should look into selling as a poster or print. I have read through many of the threads here at BetterPhoto but none of them quite answered my question. Since it's only the one photo setting up a stand/cart on a street corner seems like overkill.

I'm just looking for a one-time sale, and would probably even part with the negative (I'm a photojournalism student and can always use a little extra cash for equipment).

Thanks,
Kyle

Greetings Kyle: I'm not sure how we missed responding to your question earlier but nonetheless....

As a photojournalism student, I think you're getting off on the wrong foot. Depending on how far along you are in your studies, your instructor(s) should have explained the rights of usage concept, the copyright laws, the advantages they hold to photographers, and why unless we're specifically shooting work for hire, we never, ever, EVER make a complete, outright sale of an image and transfer all rights to a client.

While I recall clearly what it's like to be a starving student and wanting to hock my F2, I hung on. One reason is because I quickly learned that the advantage to that concept is to produce residual sales and royalties to you whereas a one-shot deal may severely undervalue that particular photo and your copyright.

Maybe the better thing to do instead of what you propose would be to find a coffee house, display it there and offer prints for sale in exchange for free coffees and build a gallery of your work there for the public to see and contact you for gigs while you're in school. Whaddya think?
Take it light.
Mark

BTW, if you haven't got a copy of Photographers Market by Writers Digest Press, I highly recommend that you get one. That's one place you'll find markets for posters, etc.

  Hi Mark,
Thanks a lot for the advice, you mentioned a few things that hadn't crossed my mind. Your suggestion to hang a print in a coffee shop reminded me that I have a friend who is opening up a bar in Montreal (my home town) and she'd probably be happy to put up some of my prints.

I'll keep my eyes open for coffee shops and the like here in Belleville.

Cheers,
Kyle

Kyle, I just happened to come across this thread.
I am located in Belleville as well and can tell you that the Bohemian Penguin downtown always has photography on the walls inside. It's the only place I could really suggest in Belleville as this is such a drab town with no really good coffee joints.

Hahaha, glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks that, Robert. I'll check them out and see what they can offer.

Cheers,
Kyle
