Photography Question

Chris Gentile

wedding photography package

I shot six weddings this past year and am looking to get into the business more steadily in 2007. For the weddings I shot (all of which were casual affairs) I simply gave the bride and groom either a CD with the pictures(which they could print themselves) or I printed the pictures for them. I'd like to start using a site such as Pictage where I can generate additional sales from other wedding guests. However, if I'm to put the pictures on Pictage and give the B&G high-res pictures on a CD, what's to stop them from making copies for all their friends to avoid the higher charges on Pictage. I was wondering how other photographers avoid this situation. Is giving a high-res CD a mistake? Should I charge a couple hundred dollars more and give the B&G a set of prints? Any input is appreciated.

I guess theres no wrong or right way to do things as far as the CDs go. Just depends on what you want to do. I charge $150 for the CD if they want it, and I also post on a e-commerce site through candid2000 called iphotos.us. At this site people can view/buy the pics, and you can set your own prices. There is no charge for posting as long as candid prints for you (I think that there is like a three percent charge per order or something like that).

Keep in mind also that pictage charges you monthly and if you don't have any weddings for a few months..you still have to pay....
Also depends on how much time you have to devote to weddings. Making them paper proofs is great in my area and they still love it versus just the digital ones online. If you just want to be done with it........why not charge a price for your time, a set of proofs and the CD....then put them online so guests and relatives order...which they still do even though the b&g have the CD....
good luck!

I too recently started wedding photography as a business. I use a company called collages.net, you can pay per upload. They also offer optional purchase of a cd or dvd when you upload to site which is copy protected, and has a copyright notice. Price your packages to include the cost of the website, the cd/dvd plus one extra for your promotional use.

I have been giving out a CD/negatives because I am new to the business. I give them the CD in exchange for letting me show off there pics however I'm not going to do so anymore because I feel that I have a pretty good amount of photos to show off. I'm doing it for a couple of reasons. I'm afraid that people are redoing the pics in there own photo programs with some silly looking effects and my name will still be associated (or printing them off at a kiosk resulting in bad prints). Also, I figure that I'm probably losing money on the online sales. If they buy the CD from me for $150, I figure that I am recooping some of the online loss and just have to take the chance of them doing stupid looking things with the pictures. Online, I think think that I charge very reasonably compared to some people in my area that also post online. My next wedding will be the first without giving up negatives, so I hope that my theory will ring true. To each there own though, I guess people should do what works out the best for them.
