Digital Exposure

I am new to digital and shoot a Olympus 20E...yesterday I tried an Engagement shoot. The settings were ISO 160, Aperture Priority set at F4 with a Quantum Flash set at 2.0 using Bulb exposure on an overcast day. Most of my shots look good but a couple were hot. I tired a shot of the couple against white trellace with a white wall behind them and that was at least 2 stops hotter. Why didn't the camera adjust. I thought perhaps I shold of gone to Shutter priority? Or Manual? Or perhaps metered and gone on Manual settings? Even on Program it was hot? Same scenario with two shots in a garden area and it was overcast? Help me learn...fellow professionals!

Depending on your lens's focal length (setting), f/4.0 may provide you with a VERY shallow depth-of-field. Too shallow?

For better exposure you could try spotmetering on skin (face?) and then bracket around it.

If the skin is dark, overexpose by one stop.
