Work Critique for Those Interested

Hello!

I don't normally do this but I was wondering if I could get some people to look at my work for the past year or so. It's portrait work as part of it is on location, and then there is some that was in a hotlight studio and some that was in my own "studio" with my new strobe lights.

Check out www.myspace.com/andylav

You can scroll down a bit as see a seperate frame where you can look through maybe 15 of my photos. It's just below two videos that you can watch it you'd like.

What I've been doing recently has been shots of different music artists/singers in the area. One is a producer, the other is a singer who is under the producer. This weekend I'll be shooting some rappers, with my camera that is, so they're in a somewhat serious for and they are guys.

I'm trying to get into a style of my own and I'm not sure how I can get more variation into my work. I think with my studio lights I'm starting to do more exploratory stuff but I don't know how to get things to look different I guess. I do feel like I do better work on location though where I can interact with more things and where I can use my insulation board reflecters to light the subjects. I think I'm also having trouble putting variation into my studio shots and I'm not sure what to do.

Also, if you're good with finding the html extentions and the actual locations of my photos, feel free to look through the rest of my stuff. Just right click on a photo and go to properties (if you're using windows) and shorten the web address that comes up, getting rid of the actual file name.

Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated. Maybe more of a critique of the work as a whole and not as much a critique of each shot individually.

If you do wish to talk about a photo individually for an example or whatever, you can identify it by it's number from the top, for instance, the photo of the guy on the couch that's a square image is "#1" and the one below it is "#2."

Thanks a million!

Andrew

PS, I've recently started looking through Vogue and doing more image searching for inspiration but any material that you can direct me towards would be great.

Your work looks very good. I would start by looking at the winners of the contest here on BP. Go back and study these prints so you can get an idea of what makes a winning photo.
I have studied the portfolios of many artists and take a bit from each and make it my own. It seems that is what you want to do. Good luck, I think you are on the right track and your work is fine...never stop growing or learning.

Would love to view and critique them, but it says I have to be a member. I'm NOT joining that ignunt site and getting slammed with unsolicited emails, so will you post them here??

"Ignunt", by the way, is low country for "ignorant".... :>)

I hear that Sipho, but that's also why I didn't put the photos in the "view more pics" section. You should be able to see them by just scrolling down once you see my purple-looking collage and the photo of me in the black and white.

There should be an "about me" section followed by 2 videos of shoots that I posted there and after those two videos you will see the pics.

Number one is absolutely terrific!! Great! Three - not so good. The effect and filters need some finessing, in my opinion. #11 also stands out. Number 2 is very nice also - classic, perfect lighting. The others, honestly, I have no opinion on, they're technically good, but just have no "wow" factor, nothing that pops. Which is not to say I think they're bad, I don't! Again, keep doing things like you did in #1 and you're gonna be great!
