Using a flash off-camera

I have a Nikon Coolpix 8700 and I just recently realized that I can use my super-old Canon flash with it. (I'm really new to flash photography!) It works very nicely when mounted in the hot-shoe, but I am wondering what to buy to be able to use it with the flash bracket I have, or just off-camera in general. Do I need to look for a sync cord specific to Nikon, or are all hot-shoe cords the same? What are my wireless options?

Unfortunately Jen, all PC cords aren't created equal nor are the hot shoes that some plug into. Some use a pin connection of one kind or another, others used a hollow PC connector into the hot shoe and a different plug that goes into the flash.

There are a couple of things you can do to find out which one is the right cord for your camera hot shoe to flash configuration. First make a note of the hot shoe part number and the manufacturer. Then go to this website:
http://www.paramountcords.com/ And look at their catalog.

You should find exactly the cord you need in the length you want. Paramount cords are a tad pricey, but I'll tell ya, they're the most reliable PC cords I've ever relied on. I've never had one go kaputsky on me (but in case, I always keep a spare or two in my bag). You can order directly from Paramount in Brooklyn or from B&H by Paramount part number. Industrial strength. Plen-t strong. If you can't find what you're looking for, call them. They're friendly and always seem glad to help out.

Wireless options? I like the Pocket Wizard set-up from Quantum Instruments. http://www.qtm.com Again, a tad pricey, but again, I've never had a Wizard fail to trigger the flash it was hooked up to, whether it was a portable or studio lighting pack. Reliability comes with a certain price I guess but then you never regret having equipment that works. :>))

BTW, now that you're getting into the realm of off-camera flash photography, you ought to consider a flash meter. ;>)
Take it light.

True that.
