Photography Question

Irene Troy

What happened?

This afternoon I was shooting the fall hunt (think horses and “fox”) for a friend of mine. I was using a Kingston Elite Pro 4GB compact flash card with my Canon 5D. About an hour into the hunt I noticed that it was taking forever for data to be written to this card. Finally, the frame count just kept blinking indicating that the card was not ready for the next frame. Keep in mind, please, that this is a fast paced sport where the horses, hounds and people are moving quickly – thus waiting for the card to catch up spells disaster. Finally, after about 5 minutes of waiting for the frame advance to stop blinking – the hunt moves across the countryside meaning that there are interludes when nothing is happening – I shut the camera off and replaced the card with a SanDisk flash card. The camera worked fine afterwards and the images on this card came out fine. The last 12-15 shots on the Kingston card did not process. The write speeds for both cards are stated at the same speed. I have used the Kingston card in other fast moving situations before without any problems. Can someone, please, tell me what happened and how to avoid this in the future? Thanks!

Irene

Irene, I've not had anything like this happen to me; but, the first thing that comes to mind is how often do you format your card?

I tend to shoot, return home and upload the images to the computer and then format the card when I replace it in the camera. This particular card was formated a day before the shoot. When I uploaded the images this morning I discovered that about 15 images never wrote to the card at all. The only thing that saves me is that I tend to "over-shoot" action scenes since things move so quickly and I am always a little afraid that I will not capture the scene the way I want.
