Painting with Light

When reading Ellen Anon and Tim Grey's "Photoshop for Nature Photographers", I tried their method of "painting with light" using a layer with "soft light", a brush, and the black/white (background/foreground)colors. This worked perfectly and I improved several images using this technique.

I recently tried using it again, following the same instructions, and no matter how often I tried it, it would not work. Nothing happens when I paint over parts of the image and my settings are exactly the same as those explained in the book.

I can, however, use the dodge and burn tools without a problem.

I prefer the other method and am wondering if anyone can tell me what might be set incorrectly in my Photoshop CS2?

Thanks!
Linda

Linda, here is what I do. I open the image in PS. Create a Levels adjustment layer (icon on bottom of layer's palette). Next, click on the icon that says, Add Vector Mask at the bottom of the layer's palette. Now go to Edit and Fill and click on the vector mask thumbnail to fill it with black. Change your blending mode to "screen" or "multiply" depending on whether you are lightening up or darkening the image. Now you can paint over the areas and see the effects as you do them. I like this method best as well. If this is as clear as mud email me and I'll try to help a little more. BTW, you have to redo the adjustment layer each time you want to lighten or darken. You can't do both at the same time. HTH
