Photography Question

Jane Foltz

contest scores

Is there any way of finding out what your photo scored in the contests? I thought it might help to know where a person was scoring so you can tell if you are getting any better. I have a photo that I really like in the special effect category and would like to know what others think about it.

  Good Morning Jane,
As much as I enjoy Better Photo and believe whole heartedly in the GOOD work they do here, I do wish people would quit putting so much stock in these contests.
I know myself and some others who submitted nationally published and award winning images and did not even get a concideration from thier team.
This is nothing against them there are 10's of thousands to be judged each month.
The contest is ment to have fun and stir the imagination and in my humble opinion should be viewed and entered as such.
Enter here for the fun of doing so, but may I suggest if you really want to enter a contest - Look into local and national Newspapers and Magizines.
also local Fairs and art museams, these provide a group of judges that are looking at a MUCH smaller scale of etries.
Has anyone ever wondered how long it must take to look at every BP entry, every month, and come up with
"best of" choices?
This endevor alone shows the commitment this site has to you, but it is a HUGE task.
Just my opinion,
Debby Tabb

Jane - I think the whole judging process at BP is a mystery and will probably remain so! :-)

Debby - I'm not really familiar with any other competitions, I just stumbled across the BP site, found it was a good learning place, and started entering the contest for fun. However I am now curious how does the BP contest stack up with others in terms of quality? Do any other contests get this many entries? Does that mean the quality is better? I suspect there must be professional-only contests that have a higher standard though there are quite a few professionals that enter at BP. Are you saying that the contest you entered and won at was a higher standard than BP and didn't get a finalist here? Or something else?

I guess I'm basicaly wondering how the BP contest quality compares with other contests.

No , most of my published images were found through corp itrest in my portrait work of thier people.
One of the ones I submitted was a national Baby Prtrait contest through "Better Houskeeping Magizine" and Basset baby Furniture.
But see what I am trying to say is , these here are for pros and amatures a like and it is world wide now times that by every catagory and then by every day of the month=???? WOW!
this is huge compitition for any one and a huge undertaking for BP.
Where to find others well: as I said the Art museams and fairs have them, internet searches and even Parade Magazine in your Sunday papers.
there will be lot out there as you start looking.
But no matter what we all wish you the very best in this quest, but hope overall each image you shoot is a WINNER to You!

Thanks Debby. So I think your concern is that maybe with the volume at BP photos aren't looked at so carefully or are sometimes overlooked? and that maybe at other smaller competitions they will be looked at more carefully?

I really do love bp and like the contest but without amy feed back it is sometimes hard to know why a photo does not score well. I think it's great that you don't have to be a pro to be recognized here. I'm not so concerened in winning as I am in understanding what is expected in a great shot. ???

  no jane,i don't enter,but I really don't think,or have heard of any scoring system.
boy sometimes if I wasn't laughing so hard at the spelling I could understand a lot more.;)
jane f. . i'm not a judge,or play one on tv,but I thought the glare in your photo was..bad? washed out the whole left side and took away a lot of detail.i know you didn't ask,but why are we here.
so if you think you have a winning photo,go back and take the same one in different lighting and compare them. then go back and do it again.the golds and reds and yellows of the early morning sun or setting sun will add much to your understanding of how light plays on a subject.first light is new light.and how does humidity and dust affect the overall scene?minutes or even seconds will make a huge difference in the final outcome.
now that I have a link to your gallery, with time,i'll go check it out.
hope your doing fine tonight cookie.all my best, sam

Sam. thanks for your comments. I'll agree with you on the way morning sunlight brings out the colors on any subject, but I will say one thing, if pictures are to capture the moment then this one did. I don't know if you have ever been to this beach but there is a time in the morning that this is just the way everything looks. I do have some better pics I'll try to get posted and sorry 'bout the spelling. You try answereing 2 phone lines tagging cattle and entering invoices and typing all at the same time;).

  hey jane f.,
oh boy.umm I was picking on debby again.sorry for the mix-up.
yes I agree that the scene you captured was of that moment.i think I was saying that maybe that capture is not what the judges are looking for.
now since you think it captured the scene in essence, then you have a winner wether the judges agreed or not.
many here say to look at the contest winners to see what the judges like.i have seen some and went-huh?and others I went-wow!
others won't make comments because some people get a little bent out of shape because they feel it a personal assualt on their photography.i just gave you feedback...and I really don't think you liked it.you didn't offend me or anything like that.i'm not miffed and think that, well!! that's the last time i'll make a comment about someones photo.
I almost always say what I think.i visited your gallery and read your bio before I made a comment.
I can even say your state is a little cheesy,it's americas dairyland.
good luck in the contest,sam

You can now have a pro, here at BP, critique up to 8 of your images for $80.00. I think it is decent value and plan on taking advantage of it.

  soo,ya see jane,mike is saying i'm not a pro?well I oughta!! he's so right.
you ever think of mentoring someone?
with my basic skills and smart remarks,i do.a lot of people here do.in their own way they contribute without compensation.well that isn't quite true, because a thanks is usually involved.
I trust you will believe in this site, with all it's quirks and oddballs like myself, who truely want to help.
maybe you would like to wear the jacket of critique and visit a gallery and say what you think of someones photo? in the end it will help you with your own photography.
being wrong or having a different point of view helps us all.
i've been to art shows and while looking at photos been asked if I would like to purchase one?
well noooo.
help can be subjective,like mine.
i just want to do better, sam
i would appreciate your help on my gallery??

Mike, you are probably right about the pro critique but If I had 80.00 I'd hire my kids pic's done.
Sam, I'm not offended and have only just started sorting the tons of photos that I have taken.I hope to get the better ones posted soon. Maybe my photos are not winners but at least I try to capture the things that mean the most to me and maybe somewhere someone else will see something they like too. Have a good evening guys and thanks again..ps if you all have time check out the last 2 I posted. I went with a co-worker to photograph a herd of organic cow that was for sale we were trying to sell to someone in TX. What a way to spend an afternoon, chasing 60 head of cows in a pasture to get enouph good shots for a potiental buyer to consider them. the one Toro is just a funny pose I plan to crop it for use elsewhere. the other one "jack" is my partner in crime.

that's not fair.no one said your photos were'nt winners.except you..i think we all said the opposite.
I am so sorry you didn't have time to check out our galleries,i have 2 herefords in mine who want to help me in my photography.that the little 1,500 hundred pound angus bull checked me out one night in my photography endeavors.he has a ring in his nose that is probably at least 4 inches around.snorts a lot and doesn't like it when I point my camera at him.that's his call.that little ring of his was just a few inches from my face.i still go back.that's where I take my evening pictures.i can walk through the whole herd at night in the dark and not raise an eyebrow.i have worked with boars who weighed in excess of 800 pounds.and made friends with.sows who weigh at least 600 pounds and have their litter outside I have to round up with no problems.i just walk with them to the farrowing house and reunite them.well used to.and I miss it.sent many off so you could sit down and have breakfast.life is a perspective.you will never change mine, for I is not my bag.
it takes a while for me to lose heart, you did.no hate or repercussion for what you said.i just have a different point of view.
overall it is not about me and you.
your photo was a winner.but because someone else didn't say so?
being older and tired like me is no excuse, sam

Ok guys After 30 years of farming I also appreciate the offerings to the breakfast table lol;)as well as both your comments.I have looked at both of your galleries and thought your shots were wonderful. Learning is a life long process and I wonder if I will ever get this photo thing right. Someday maybe I can upgrade my camera and with a lot more study... maybe... we'll see. got to go do some feeders will check in later. Jane

Jane, FYI, There is a filter holder on the market for P&S camers, It is held to the camera by the tripod socket on the bottom. I think it is made by Cokin. and comes with 2 filters although I forgot which 2. I bought it a couple of years ago at Ritz.

B&H has the filter holder available on special order.I guess that not may people with compact cameras use filters. Just be aware that the holder extends in front of the lens but if your lens extends too far, it may interfer at the long end. It holds the cokin A size filters. I had placed 1 order with B&H and was pleased with the service and pricing. They also will email you when the item ships out. This one does not come with filters.
Here is the link so you do not have to search for it.

filters may help in your photography, but I prefer time of day and the right light.the right month, the right year.
if you are dissuaded from a mere rejection on one photo, your demise will only be yourself.your confidence in your own ability will drop, and your results will show it.
like you said,my photos..
be proud of your photos and be very critical and do your best to improve your photos.that is the goal.and if by chance or endeavor you get a winner(by the judges)my congrats.
allright...now i'm jealous..you have lots of beer?????biscuits and gravy for all.
I think we have the same goal, sam
