How to Add Color to a Black and White Photo

I've seen a bridal portrait inwhich the entire picture was in black and white; all except bouquet she was holding. What an awesome picture. Does anyone know how to achieve that with the digital photo software?

Hi Kim... you're asking about "selective coloring" in an image; there are many threads on BP for just that topic, if you do a search for those words. Essentially, you're simply selecting (in the software) the part of the color image you wish to change to B/W (without selecting say, the flowers) and then converting that area to B/W (Grayscale, Gradient Map, Desaturate, to name a few methods.)

Thanks Chris- I just bought the Microsoft photo software and was unable to produce the desired image. Let me search BP and I'll tell you how it goes.... Thanks again!

Kimberley, do you have access to Photoshop, (6, 7 or CS).
If you do then all you have to do is the following:

How to turn a colour image to Black and White or Greyscale and then bring the colour back in one or two items.

1. Open a colour image.
2. Make a copy of it on the layers pallet (F7) and leave the background copy selected.
3. Hit Ctrl Shift U and the image will become greyscale.
4. Select the history brush tool from the toolbar (y on your keyboard).
5. Now hold down your left mouse button and move the brush over the item or person you want to re-colour and hey presto your work of art appears. Remember, you can change the size of your brush on the keyboard by selecting the square brackets just to the right of the letter P on your keyboard.
6. Now flatten the image and save it with a new name. Looks good don’t it ?
