Photography Question

Betsy Labuschagne

Has anyone ever felt like this?

I've had a portrait studio for a year now. I'm only starting to become a little more comfortable with the quality of images that I'm giving my customers. I actually looked back at some pictures that I did when I started out; I gave them to people, who paid for them...I actually feel guilty!! I know there's a learning curve, but is there ever a time that one can look at your pictures and feel that they are perfect? Has anyone else felt bad that they knew so little when they started out?

  Hi Betsy,
Every body goes through that, even if you had worked with a pro for sometime, you would still do your own things different and then look back, and as your studio progressed, you may feel your work or how you conduct it has changed and gotten better.
those who came in the begining can always be sent a " Come see how we have grown " offer, that includes something special for being part of your first year clientel.
Think of it this way, at least you see yourself as getting better, when a lot of companies don't get better, they are satisfied with thier clentel list and feel they will grow regardless and treat thier customer as such.
I think of you often Betsy and am so glad how you have grown,
Debby
** to those who don't realize Betsy started the Studio Photography Threads, and she took off running!
CONGRADULATIONS!!

Good to hear from you Debby! Thanks for your words of encouragement!!

I have had quite a few return customers, some have been 3-4 times in the last year. Every time I think to myself that they will go home and compare the pictures with the first ones that I did for them, and wonder why they ever thought I was good enough in the first place :-) Am I paranoid???

I wish I could have bought my equipment and studied and experimented before I ever opened my doors. When people phone me now to make a second booking I just feel bad to think that I didn't give them good pictures to start with.

Betsey they would never return and pay you money to do their photos if they did not like your work. They will compare the first pics with your current and see how they have grown. You have a wonderful gallery full of remarkable photos. You Go Girl!!!!

Thank you Pat and Jane! I am very critical of my work and there is just so much to learn, it seems overwhelming sometimes. I just wanted to know if anyone else had felt that they wished they could have done better from the start. I guess I'll have to stop looking back and just concentrate on improving. In another year I'll probably feel like this again :-)

  I sure hope so Betsy,
that will only mean your can see the constant changes and appreciate all your steps a long the way.
I had a lovely man who I contribute, so much of my growth to.
And carry his passion for the art with me daily.
I see him in so much of my work and style.
And have so much appriciation for him and and the art he taught and for my own tenasity, in becoming as good as he.
and treasue each experiance.
I hope you will as well.
Wishing you a long success,
Debby

OMG! I can't believe you are so hard on yourself. You are a fantastic photographer. I love your style. The reason people come back is because they love your work. I do the same thing. It was refreashing to read that others go through the same thing. Keep up the beautiful work.

Your portfolio is wonderful. Many very creative and expressive portraits.

I've had feelings like I wished I had exposed an HDR set or tried a different composition at a certain location looking back years after the fact. Old habits from shooting film and thinking about the cost factor. Thank goodness I'm past that :)

Seeking perfection may be secondary to making a personal connection I believe. Your working at a high level of quality.

Hi Betsy. What are you talking about I looked at your gallery and you are Good! They should come back for more. We all are getting better with every photo we take, none of us are perfect. I wish my photos were as good as yours, just getting ready to start portrait photos. Keep up the good work and don't worry about your photos you are just fine.!!
