Your using a lightmeter whenever your take a photo with any 35mm, digital medium format camera made in the last 2 decades. You can still buy a separate meter, and take readings of the light falling on the subject (and incident light reading) to compre with your camera's reading (a reflected light reading). You can leave the camera in place and move around your subject to get readings from different parts of the scene or from an 18% gray card); you can measure flash output with anay meters, ans colout temperature for accurate white balance settings (or filtration with film).
