Calling Mamiya 645 know-it-alls

Hi there. I just recently got a Mamiya 645E and it's going great so far. The price was great and I've loved using it so far. Right now I only have the standard 80mm f/2.8 lens that came with it but I'm looking for a wider lens, maybe around 45mm and for a longer lens for more portrait work. I don't want too long of a lens but I don't want a shorter longer lens. I'm not really sure of the equal to 35mm but I'm thinking that if I divide the lens length by 1.6 that will give me the equal. Is that right? I'm looking for something that is over 80mm (in 35mm) but probably 135mm tops. How close do these lenses focus anyways? Will I be able to get a good headshot or will I need to stand back further because it might not be able to focus as close? I'm looking to spend somewhere between $100 and $150.

Thanks for your help!

Andrew

Congratulations on your purchase. Although I use Pentax MF rather than Mamiya I might be able to help you. You need something like a 150 mm lens (90 mm equivalent in 35mm). KEH has the 150mm f/3.5 in EX condition, with caps, for $115.00. It focuses to a little less than 5 feet.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! It's really amazing to be able to get this stuff for this price. Lenses don't have to cost hundreds of dollars. I definitly don't need autofocus for what I'm doing so it's not bad at all. Now for a wide angle...(Christmas is coming up! hahaha)

To keep the budget thing going, I might be so bold as to suggest ebay. I know all the horror stories, but I've had nothing but good luck on ebay.

Yeah, I'm finally getting started on the ebay thing. I've also found these lenses that I'm looking for on KEH.com for around $100 so that's not bad. But I'll definitly check out ebay for camera stuff too. Thanks!

Ok, so I found something weird about this camera, or rather, the lens. For some reason it doesn't seem to want to focus to infinity. Once again the camera is a Mamiya 645E and the lens is a Mamiya - Sekor 80mm f/2.8 N. I don't understand how it works like this though. I was at a lake yesterday taking some pictures when I noticed that I couldn't get the distant trees in focus without stopping down the lens a little and previewing the scene. I do know that the lenses that I use for 35mm have a little extra rotation in them and I haven't had this problem but the Mamiya lens stops right at the infinity sign. Does it seem like there's something wrong with the lens or is this just possibly a quirk for these lenses? It just seems weird that I wouldnt' be able to take landscape shots wide open if needed.

Thanks again.
