Buying My First Digital SLR

Hello,
My name is Veronica Holguin and I am trying to decide which of the three digital SLR cameras to buy. The prices are pretty comparable. I have the SLR Maxxum 3 camera. This would be my first digital SLR camera.

The choices are the Sony Alpha (10.2) MP., Nikon D70, and the new Canon Rebel XTi (10.2) megapixel.

I have three kids (2 boys) and (1) girl. Ages 5, 6, 8. They're all involved in sports so I take lots of photos. Also, we are always going to baseball, football, and bastekball games.

Can you please help me decide which one would be the best camera to buy?

Thank You,

Veronica Holguin

I would say go with either the Nikon or the Canon. There are many good arguments for both sides.

You mentioned that two of the cameras have 10.2 megapixels ... but I think there are more important things to look at.

I would suggest you look at lenses and such. If you like what you see and hear about Nikon lenses, go that direction. Or if you like what you see and hear about Canon lenses, go that way. Buying the camera is only the first step.

You can find some kind of rating system on this site where camera owners have rated their cameras. You can also see examples of what kind of pictures these cameras can take. Find that survey and you'll see what people think of their Sony, Nikon, or Canon.
(okay, I found it. at the top of the page you'll see a button for "Resources" hover your mouse over that and go to "Comparisons")

Oh, and Welcome to BetterPhoto! After you get your camera and familiarize yourself with it, share some pics with us.

or go to Resources > Calculators. Take the quiz and browse through that area.

  Veronica,

I'm sure all three choices will give you fine results.
You will find much advice concerning which one to buy, some of it biased, some with factual evidence.

My advice would be to try and handle each camera for several minutes. Some cameras are just not comfortable for some to hold..Nothing worse than hours of shooting with a camera that just doesn't feel right.

Sony, while probably a good camera certainly does not have the name recognition as Canon and Nikon.

All the best,

Pete

I am a long term Canon user, but stri=ongly support the view that you should handle them all and find what suits you. I am sure your research has shown you that the Alpha has inherrited the excellent Minolta technology, so you can use your Minolta lenses with it. that can be a real saving.
