Photography Question

Canon EOS 400D

Anyone read the DP rewview on the new 400D / Kiss XT? Canon's new 10mp - sounds really exciting to me. As a 350D owner, and looking at a 2nd camera - makes sense as all my batteries/grips and accessories would be compatable. And at USD799, its a lot cheaper than the 30D. Also as a women, I find ease of handling and weight a serious consideration. Any other comments?

Pushing this thread back to the top. I spoke to a salesman today, who suggested that the 30D would be a better bet than the 400D (for my purposes anyway) As I'm shooting more and more weddings, they reckon I need a more rugged camera, and that the 10 megapixels of the 400D are not as important as what the 30D will offer - he was going on about the size of the sensor, but he lost me. I thought all sensors were smaller (thats why we have a 1.6 conversion factor) and its only the 5D and up where its full frame. Quite a price difference for me between the two, and it seems the 400D is going to have some nice features. I'm travelling out of SA soon, so buying one o/seas is a possibility, as they're damn expensive here. I know they're not out yet, but if any of the Canonista's have read the spec's and have some comments I'd appreciate it.

Hi Robyn... I'm definitely considering that model, compared to the 30D myself, as an SLR upgrade from my Sony P&S.
I looked at a 400 tonite, actually (here, at least, named Canon Rebel XTi, but I've seen it referenced online as 400D.) They are in the stores (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc) in my area, but I was unable to confirm that they had more than just the floor model yet! Supposedly stock will be available by month-end.
You're right that the 5D is Canon's full-frame (before you get into the 1D lines)---the 30D, 20D, 10D, Rebel XTi/400, Rebel 350, etc---are all the smaller sensor. For my interests, the XTi seemed to have everything (that I cared about) which first drew me to look at the 30D---but for $400-$500 less.
www.dpreview.com had a nice, early writeup on the XTi/400, if you haven't checked that out yet.

HI Chris, yes I read the DP Review and thought wow! But as mine is really becoming a 'working' camera - the salesmen were going on about the better metering system, and the mag. alloy body, and it being tougher etc. I don't know if its just sales talk, as obviously they'd want to sell the more expensive one. Thats why I'm looking for a more objective honest comment. I like the self-cleaning thing on 400d, and the fact that its 10mp. Then the salesman was going on about the megs not being the most important, that its the sensor, and I thought Hmmmmmm sounds like sales schpiel!! Surely all of them (except 5D and up) have the same size sensor, therefore more megapixels on that sensor mean better image?

I don't know how true it is but I have read that there is not a noticeable difference between 8 and 10MP,until you get to poster size.

So I did mega research about this camera and even emailed Canon. I have come to the conclusion that 400d/XTi is a great camera for most uses. Now the sales man who told you about it does not matter about the mega pixels is an idiot to say it nicely. Canon recommended the 400d over the 30d based on the newer features. HOWEVER, they will be releasing a newer camera(they didn't say which) similar to the 30d but with all the new features of the 400D. The 30D is faster for weddings, huge plus. The sensor is the same size in all lower end digital. The 1D and etc are exceptions obviously. So it just comes to what you prefer. They both take GREAT photos. I use them BOTH. The 30d is just a wee bit faster. Just go rent one from a good local camera shop and see what you think.

Thanks Mike and Gary - I didn't see your answers before. I in fact bought the 30D, and LOVE it!! I have though, since advised 2 friends to buy the 400D, as they don't do weddings, and are just looking at it for purely personal usage - the one friends, got his already, and loves it, and the other's 400D is on its way from the US, I'm sure he'll be just as happy!

Congratulations on getting the 30D. I think the 1st thing you probably noticed was the build quality. I have had my 20D completely drenched and it is just fine but I dont think my old Rebel XT would have survived.
