Photography Question

Dale Hardin

I love this photo and don't know why

I have looked at this photo again and again and like everything about it except I don't know why. It is not dynamic, it's not in focus, and is not an exciting subject, yet it appeals to me.
Can anyone offer suggestions that might help me understand what make a good photo?

...nostalgia...
A memorable place,
- hometown
- college campus

Example, someone saw my photos and bought three images (poster size prints). It turned out the place was where he asked his then-girlfriend, now his better-half, marry him. They loved the photos...

Memorable flowers:
(my personal experience)
- I love photos of Cyclamen, the flower my Mom loved...
- I also love photos of Morning Glory, something to do with my childhood memory...

It conveys a strong 'sense of place', a sense of "this is exactly how it was when I took the picture" - the capture of a moment. It has a feel of documentary, of realness.

When we photograph a particular subject or place, we are privy to the particulars involved.
We know exactly what we were doing and what we were thinking when the shot was taken. When we view that photo those thoughts and memories are re-surfaced.

What makes a good photo?
When someone else looks at that photo and is able to interpret the thoughts and emotions you experienced when you took it.

Thank you all for your input. I believe they are all correct. It indeed does take me back to that moment. However, after much deliberation I am beginning to believe that techically the softness of the image helps contribute to the pleasantness of the time, place, and memories. Also the fact that nothing seems out of place gives a feeling of comfort and peace.

Again, thank you all for taking the time to help me.

Dale

I think you're right, Dale. Also, the colors are very nice, and the composition really isn't that bad, so that might have something to do with it.

  Dale,
Why did you take this photo? Who was with you at that time it was taken? What was you thinking at the time you took it. Maybe one of those reason is why you enjoy this photo.

Thanks, Kendall. I think you hit upon it. I had just ended a photo safari that left me wanting. It had gone too fast without time to reflect, setup, and take images that I wanted to do in the way I wanted to do them.

As my son-in-law and I were returning to the cruise ship I wanted to capture one more image that told where we were and where we had been. When I viewed it later I was reminded of what a great place it was and promised to return under my on terms.

  Hi Dale,

Guess what I like the photo also. It just remind me of everyday people going about their everyday life.

Aside from very interesting foreground, the vanishing point perspective of the wet sidewalk draws me to the mountain in the background. All the people are walking in the "right" direction with the perspective reinforces that feeling. I feel like I'm there! I can smell the ozone and cool temperature. Great job...
