Photography Question

PRINTING

I have had constant problems with making prints at labs after I have edited my photos on photoshop from either scanning or uploading images.
What happens is I bring the images on disc that have been edited in photoshop and either the images do not show up on there computer to print, or the images never transferred onto the disc. Or if the image is on the disc and cannot load onto there computer they question what format I saved the image at. Sometimes I save it as a .tiff, but lately I have saved as high resolution .jpg files. I think I am doing something wrong in photoshop. I edit my photos and save them as Adobe RGB. Should they be saved as RGB or sRGB for printing? I want the best colors available and have a ICC profile. I am at a total loss and dont know what I am doing wrong. Could the problem be that the camera saves as RGB and it is being converted somehow when I import it into PHotoshop and maybey there are 2 types of profiles being embedded? I appreciate all imput!!!!!
One last thing, I am no longer saving at .tiff being the images were too large and I thought that was the problem, but I am still having problems when I go to the lab.

  Marisa -

It's unlikely that the color space you're using has anything to do with whether the files can be opened or not. My guess is that you have spaces in the file names and it's causing problems when creating the CD.
When saving your images for CD, try to use the old standard filenames of 8.3 - 8 character max for the file name with a 3 character extension like TIF or JPG.

I would be more than happy to take a look at one of your files to see if there are any specific problems with embedded profiles, but I don't think that's your problem here. When you send images to a lab they normally want them in sRGB but you should ask for what color space they prefer.

  Marisa,

I agree with Jon. The colorspace wouldn't prevent the lab from being able to open the files. It is also possible that you're files aren't being burned correctly. What program are you using to burn your CD's? Are you working on a Mac or PC?

When preparing images for a digital photo lab, always use sRGB unless given other instructions. A photograph can only have one color profile, so you don't have to worry about two profiles being embeded.

Marisa, I have had the same problem, but it's my Roxio CD writer on my computer. For some reason, Walmart's kiosks will NOT read any of my disks with the pics on them. If they have the time to put the disk right in their computer, then they can see them.

In Feb., I had my hardrive reformatted by Best Buy, and ever since then, I can't use the kiosks. It's very frustrating. You may also want to make sure your discs are formatted. I know you shouldn't have to worry about that now a days, but I still format them just to be sure.

I'm not sure if this has been helpful, but I do know my problem is my CD writer. Jess

  Jess -

It's more than just Roxio - by the way, what version are you using>

I've lost the contents of 10 Memorex 24X CD-RWs created using Roxio Creator 8.0. Three calls to Tech Support yielded comments like:

We've had problems with Memorex CDs.

What kind of burner do you have? Plextor, Hmmm, we've noted problems with Plextor!

Are you sure your computer is properly configured? HMMMM!

Once I went over to Sony CD-Rs [Serial 10CDQ80L3] I've been able to read the CDs. My computer guru suggested I avoid CD-RWs, especially the Memorex 24Xs. He indicated that he had similar experiences with TDKs, ultimately he started using notably inexpensive CDs [e.g. Staples own brand.] Now I know that's contrary to conventional wisdom, but . . .

One thing I did find was that it's best to try to fill a CD in one session AND go through the "finishing" process as a last step. Tha Manual says that, when you "finish" the CD, it's left in a condition that can be read by most CD-readers. In the "open" state, it seems very reasonable that only CD-reader/writers, used to burn the disk using Roxio software, will be able to read it.

  John,
I would bet money that your last paragraph is the solution to this problem. Some CD-burning programs seem to default to writing a "multi-session" disc unless you choose to finish the disc and close it.

I suspect the thinking behind this was that CD-RW discs were expected to be "all the rage". But CD-R discs have gotten so inexpensive, that it doesn't really make much sense to bother with CD-RWs or multi-session discs.

If you want to use expensive "high-quality" discs for long-term archival backup, that's fine, I won't argue that point.

But if you just need to bring some pictures to a lab, or give a friend copies of some shots you took at his kid's birthday party - go to Office Depot, spend 6 bucks on a spindle of 50 CD-Rs, and consider them disposable. Don't fret over the fact that you've only used a fraction of the space on the disc, close it out to ensure that the person on the other end will be able to read it.

After all, you've only spent a whopping 12 cents (plus tax) on the disc.

I've been using a Memorex CD-RW written with Nero6 and they have worked great for me. Usually I've taken some photos to walmart and I upload them to the kiosk for one hour. I did have trouble with some CD-Rs not being read by the kiosk though they worked fine with the tech's cd drive.

Restating what I remember from other people just here, there's the problem with sometimes writing multisession discs and not finalizing. If you're taking your discs to kiosks I would definitly suggest only JPEG because I've found that even if you have a single TIFF image on the disk it won't read the disc at all. Also, check to see if the color depth is the lowest, 8 per channel and not more.

well, I feel so not alone! Yes I do use the Memorex CD-RW, and I guess I won't be buying anymore of them from now on! Thanks John! This version is Roxio 9, but I have gone back through old CDs, and some say 14, so I don't know why the difference in numbers.

It has been very frustrating not being able to copy files and use the kiosks, as my family does a lot of scrapbooking, so Walmart is fine for that. I've even gotten to uploading through the net to them too, but if you have a large file, you have to knock it down to 4MB. That affects quality on larger prints.

Anyway, your infor you guys supplied was very helpful to me too, so thanks!

Jess

I wanted to thank you all for responding!Sorry to not have responded quicker. Alot going on! Regarding filename, I did use file names with spaces, so now I am trying to do it in less than 8 characters as you guys have said. Does the folder have to be a single space name too? Regarding types of files - this is the odd thing. My camera shoots in sRGB, when I upload them, it asks if I want to convert to RGB, I say no, but it does anyhow. I do my thing and edit, than I save as JPG. I always save my images at 500 dpi as a JPG. Well that is since I talked to all of you! In the past I either scanned in at 1200 dpi, or saved images at 800 dpi and as .tiff files. I wonder if either the size, .tiff, or file name did have somtheing to do with my not being able to print. I always keep it at 8 bits. To give you an idea..in the past, my .tiff files were about 75-120 mb per pic! Regarding Walmart or other dept kiosks...yes that is where I have the problem. I want to know though, will SRGB work as well as RGB. I am not one that understands all the calculations, so be easy on me! :) Regarding Roxio - I had to laugh when you told me you had the same problem! Yes I have a old old pc, and it is windows, and I have a ancient roxio program. But I made it through the glitches. Maybye I can help you! Roxio... never use a buffer more than 1x. Microsoft told me over the phone that Roxio skips if over 1x. Also, the cd's that I have used for years is Fuji, or Imation CDR. Sometimes the program fails....so I toss the cdr. No biggie. I have 100 more. I have had problems with cd-rw also. But you should not have a problem with imation or fuji, and set it at 1 x buffer, and do disc at once. Also keep short file names when you put them into the section where you want to record. It does not read long file names. I will let you guys know if my prints come out. Thank you Thank you all!!
