additional lenses

I bought a Nikon N80 w/c comes with a 28-80mm AF lens. My old cameras were a Yashica and a vivita both of which are manual SLRs. These old cameras use fixed 35mm lenses. Whys is it that the photos from these old cameras are sharper than those of the N80. I'm still a little confused with the N80 since im used to the older manual slrs. Do I need to buy a fixed lens for shooting portraits and family occasions such as weddings etc. or does the N80 packaged lens have all the capabilities I need. I feel a bit intimidated when I see Canons and minoltas around me. Can the N80 be used for professional photography or can you suggest a better brand. Hope your can help. thanks BINX

As a general rule, prime lenses (non-zoom) have better resolution and contrast than zoom lenses.

Zoom lenses are getting better, but without the use of Ultra Low Dispersion and corrective elements, it still remains below the quality of a prime. Pro-series lenses usually are quite liberal with the use of high quality corrective elements. If it came in a bundle with the N80, I doubt it's pro quality.

Most your questions are a matter of personal taste. Do you care if the definition becomes a little soft when you open your lens right up? A zoom of that range is pretty practical, but portrait shots are a little harder to do with only an 80mm. (80-135 is generally considered portrait range)

Remember that the camera is just a box that controls how long the shutter remains open. The real equipment that takes the photo is the glass. You can buy the best Nikon lens you want and attach it to a light sealed cardboard box with film inside it, and the picture quality will still be brilliant (exposure to be considered)

With your question about whether it can be used for professional photography? Some of the greatest artists used completely manual cameras with one single lens only.

I suggest you stick with Nikon, but invest in a good lens. Like this one:

28-200mm f/3.5-5.6D IF AF

http://www.nikonusa.com/usa_product/product.jsp?cat=1&grp=5&productNr=1974NCP

It's built using aspherical elements to provide better sharpness and contrast.

Goodluck!

For portraiture in situation where you can sacrifice the flexibility of a zoom lens, take a serious look at the Nikon's 85mm 1.8, which is arguably one the sharpest and contrastiest lenses Nikon manufactures(go to www.photodo.com for mtf ratings on this lens). For full length portraiture look at either the 50mm 1.4 or 60mm 2.8 macro. Also consider the 105 2.8 macro for portraiture as well. In the zoom category: If money is no object look at the Nikon's 28-70 2.8 AFS. If money is an object look at Tokina's 28-80 2.8 (an excelent lens for the money).

Note that I listed the prime lenses first. This is because as mentioned above they are sharper than the zooms. I tend to use prime lenses when I do not need the flexibity of the zooms i.e. studio and some wedding situations. The differences between professional constant aperture zooms and primes, while still noticeable, in many situations are negligible. These types of zooms are a great alternative to primes when budget, weight and/or flexibility are issues.

The N80 can not only be used as a professional camera--the N80 is used as a professional camera as well as the N65(some mountain climbing "landscapers" prefer them for their light weight). As Ken P. mentioned, it is the glass that really affect how the picture will look.

Happy Shooting!

  to Ken and Oscar,

Thank you very much. Your inputs are not that easy to find in prints since I am not well versed on the technical jargon of photography. I'm not a pro yet, but I'm looking at the possibility of making this a career in the future. In my country, pros do great portraits. However a lot people here gets dissappointed with wedding photos. I hope to make a difference hee someday. Thanx again.
