Photography Question

Will Wohler

istockphoto.com

I read in a photography mag about these royalty free stock photo agencies, one being istockphoto.com. Has anyone used this site before and if so would you be willing to give me some feedback as to how it works and if it's a good deal?

Thanks

I was looking at sites like that when I was first thinking about selling. I'm sure that the sites are fine to use. However, this allows people to buy downloads of your prints for hardly anything, which isn't so great for you. Yes, you get more buyers that way, but it's not very professional, and it's really just best for people with other jobs looking for an easy way for their hobby (photography) to support itself. I've heard people say they make around $400 a month, which is okay, but not if you want that to be your primary source of income.

After doing lots of research, I decided to go with ifp3.com, where I have control over the site, set my prices and options, and keep almost all income from the sales. The bad part about this is you have to pay to have the site (like $300 a year) and you have to market your work yourself.

So I guess it boils down do if you want to put in lots of effort and try to build customers or if you want an easy way to make some side money.

Take it easy,

Ariel

  Hi Will

I use Shutterpoint http://www.shutterpoint.com/ you can set your price starting at $20, however you have to pay for space which very cheap, i.e.$12 for 50MB for six months, they have bundles for one year & 100MB for like $32. You get 85% of your sales, they keep only 15%. I also use Fotolia.com - but this dirt cheap, prices go from $1 to $3 and you keep 50% if give them exclusivity, if not you keep 33%, which you have to have hundreds of downloads to get a decent $'s. Another one I looked at is Shutter stock - http://submit.shutterstock.com/ it is free, but these people are though, and examine you photo in every detail, and they would rejected for a silly reason, like they might say "rejected because it is 1% more noisy than our standards" or "we have lot of this theme", but it is for free. Hope this helps. Karim.
