Photography Question

question about speedlights

I don't own one yet, but I was thinking....., if your speedlight is attached to the hotshoe, and you turn your camera vertically for a portrait shot, do you lose any light to the side, and if you do, how do you light the person(s) properly?

I know there are the brackets, but I'm not sure how they work exactly.

I was thinking more on the lines of, if you were shooting without a tripod, how do you hold everything?, especially if you are holding the speedlight off to the side?

This is what I'm thinking about at 12:40 am EST, instead of sleeping!

TIA, Jess

Jessica, I've had so much trouble with turning my camera vertical and getting a shadow on the opposite side the flash was fired from, so , I got a camera flip flash bracket and the flash cord , now the flash stays on top even if I flip the camera. MY LIFE JUST GOT EASIER!!! WHOO HOOO :) I've got the Canon RebelXT - Canon flash cord 2-and Strobofoam Quick Flip Flash Bracket.

Thank you Brenda. I checked this one out, and another one mentioned in another thread, but the one from B+H was more expensive. The Stroboframe is reasonable. Does it work with all cameras?

Jesica, I'm only assuming that it will work with all cameras. mine is pretty standard with the screw hole for the tripod that s where the flash bracket will attach. they also sell a quick release bracket to put on the camera to take it from the flash bracket to your tripod , I purchased my stuff from EBAY. the cord was $44.95 and the bracket was $58.99 plus the S&H . if you want the sellers that I got them from I will Email them to you. :)

sorry it wont go to straight to your tripod , you"ll have to remove the release bracket first, it just makes it easiet to remove from the flash bracket itself

Well, there's some more money to go towards my wish/need list. I was planning on using it for handholding anyway, not necessarily for the tripod, but may need the quick release for that too eventually. The quick release is actually more thna the bracket! J.

I personally dont have a need for the quick release either, I'd still have to undo my cord also so mine just stays on the flash bracket all the time pretty much, LOL unless i'm doing a still shot where I absolutly need my tripod.
