Filter Sizes in comparison to my lense

When I am looking at differen't filters online, they usually have a mm number by them, like 77mm, 31mm, or something of that sort. Does this mean that the filter I am interested in buying might not match up with the lense I want to use it with, or are they all universal sizes? If my assumption isn't true, could someone explain to me how to find out what filters will fit over my lense?

ooh, ooh, I know! Just had to do that, as I have been researching this subject extensively myself lately.

The mm is millimeters, as in measurement. Each lens has a specific mm opening, which should be on the front of your lens cover, or in your lens literature, or go online, and look the info up.

If you are looking for a screw on filter, you will need to know what that measurement is, so you order the correct size, for that lens.

If you are looking for Cokin or Lee "P" sized filters to use with the holder, you again need to know the size so you order the proper adapter size for your lens, then the holder goes over the adapter. For this type filter, you would need an adapter for each lens you would be using the holder and filters with.
