Photography Question

family photographs

I am taking some photos tomorrow for a family of 3 (mum, dad and a 19 month old). We are planing on taking the shots late in the afternoon. What would be a safe f/stop number to make sure I get everyone in focus but also keep the background soft.

Would f/4 be OK or should I go with something smaller (f/5 or 6)?

Greetings Jodie: I'm assuming whatever lens you're shooting this deal with has a depth of field preview....yes.....no????

Once you get set up, check the depth of field. F 4.0 or 5.6 is pretty shallow. I'd guess you need something like F 8.0. It all depends on how you position your folks and what's in the background and how close they are to it. Also, the surrounding late afternoon brightness and how much fill flash you use for the actual shot is another consideration.

It's never easy is it.
Be well.
Mark

OOps...forgot. Bracket your exposures starting at f4.0, but also vary your shutter speed or ISO to compensate accordingly.

  Thanks Mark.
I'm using a 350 rebel with the 24-105mm f/4 L IS lens. I have tried using the DOF preview before, with little success. I may have to use some fill flash as I'm sure my male subject will have a hat on. Guess I will keep it safe at an f/8 for the group shots and bring it down for some individual shots.
