Photography Question

Which prime lens to buy next?

I have been playing with my 50MM 1.8 AF lens for a while now. I love it! I am feeling ready to move on to something else. I do alot of indoor candid and portrait work, so need something good in low light. I also find I have to back up too much with the 50mm. So I want something shorter. Plus budget is always a concern. Can anyone recommend a good lens to buy next? I like the background effect of the 50 mm and would like something similar in a shorter lens. Thanks!

Lisa

Knowing which camera make and model would help in the suggestions not being so generalistic.
Although you may be cramped for space, if you're shooting portraits, you really don't want to go too wide as it will distort the perspective. Wouldn't want your clients looking like Bozo.
With wide angle lenses, things closer to the lens look much bigger than things further away. So, being too close with a wide angle lens to a portrait subject could give you some strange results.
Being the first portrusion the lens would encounter, a persons nose would become somewhat larger in perspective to the rest of the face. Granted, the actual effect is dependent on how wide the lens is, and how close you are to the subject. I certainly wouldn't advice anything wider than 35mm for portraiture, and that for 3/4 and full length shots. Certainly not for H&S.
Most photographers prefer a slightly longer lens actually. The two most important reasons are perspective and distance.
Using an 85mm puts a little more distancd between you and the subject and they feel just a tad more comfortable than if you were right on top of them.
And the perspective compresses things just a slight tad which gives a generally more pleasing appearence and more natural looking.
But if space is really at a premium, then you do what ya gotta!

Sorry about that. I have the Nikon D70s.

Nikon's short focal length prime lenses are very good, but only 2 are faster than f/2.8:
AF 28 f/1.4D and AF 35 f/2D.
Nikon has manual focus 24 f/2, 28 f/2 and 35 f/1.4 AI-S lenses that can be used with the D70s, but its meter will not function with them. They would be limited to M mode with exposure set with a separate meter.

Otherwise, Sigma has several "fast" primes shorter than 50:
20 f/1.8 EX DG
24 f/1.8 EX DG
28 f/1.8 EX DG
30 f/1.4 EX DC HSM
