best inexpensive zoom lens for rebel XT Hi! Can anyone suggest an inexpensive zoom lens for a canon rebel xt? I want it for shooting sporting events and stage shots. Thanks!

The "usual suspects" are: Canon EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM - at ~$280 it is the most expensive in this class, but the only one with non-rotating front element (easier to use with polarizing filter) and Canon's fast/silent ring-USM that allows full-time manual focusing. Canon EF 55-200 f/4.5-5.6 USM II - ~$210 Not as long a maximum reach as the others (to 200mm v. 300mm), but the 55-200 range is very useful on the XT. Reputed to be pretty sharp, it is smaller and much lighter than any of the 70-300 alternatives. Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO DG - ~$200 reputed to be marginally sharper at 200-300 than all others in this class. Older version APO (but not DG) is as good and a few dollars less. Tamron 70-300 f/4-5.6 Di LD - ~$190. Similar to Sigma APO. The current Di version has improved lens coatings and is preferred over the prior non-Di model. Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 DG - $140 Probably best value for the money. The new DG model has improved optical design and lens coatings, much better than the older DL version.

I have the Tamron 75-300mm and just love it. I know I could have spent more and maybe gotten a better product but I'm still so new to this that I'm happy with what I chose. My next purchase will be a wide angle. I think I'll get a Canon lens for that purchase.

Another vote for the Tamron 70-300. When I compared shots form this lens and the Canon in the same price range, I was surprised to find better quality images from the Tamron.
