Photography Question

Megan McKenzie

clear subject with an out of focus background

OK another question. I got a new lens for my camera and am going to be taking some pictures outdoors. My camera is a Canon digital rebel and my new lens is a canon EF 1.8 50mm.
My question is when shooting on manual mode what shutter speed and aperature are used to create the look of a clear subject or object and a very out of focus background? Any help would be appreciated.
THANK YOU.
Megan

Look up "depth of field" here in the threads and on google. You'll find a LOT!

leave it at 1.8 and most of your shot will be out of focus! try 2.8 to f4 and watch your meter in the VF. rotate the shutter dial till the meter reads in the center. there is no set aperture or shutter speed for Bokeh... it depends on your distance to the subject, the distance between the subject and the BG and then your lighting, if its a very bright day, f 2.8 0r 1.8 might be too much and youll get blown out highlights.. and keep the shutter speed up high. Just watch your meter. or shoot in AV mode, try a few different F stops from 1.8 to f 5 and let the camera decide what the shutter is gonna be.

Shutter speed is not important. The clsoer to the subject you are and the larger the aperature you use the lesser is the depth of field, thus creating a blurred background.
