Jill, please ignore Russel, he is our resident name-changer/trouble-maker.

I think that the photo does look a little soft though. Try sharpening it, that should help.

It looks like a snapshot, as it is. I would be sharpen it, do some dodging and burning (especially to the sky). Maybe add a cooling filter. Just MHO.

looks like poor light/wrong time of day,or from shooting out the back window?
and that crazy light pole with the sign hanging on it caught up in the photo.a little distracting.
and is that white house in the center beginning to sink to the right a little?
shoot away or compose?
good luck,sam

Okay, Jill - you have asked for a critique and have received some good responses; however, I can tell that you are frustrated because no one has been able to really explain what is wrong with this image. Being as I am such an expert (OH YEAH/ NO NO NO – A 1000 TIMES NO) I’ll try to give you some hints. I also love to photograph mountains and have learned a couple of important things. First, time of day is really important. This particular image appears to have been taken mid-day or at least when the light was far from good. Early morning or late afternoon/evening are often the best times for any outdoor photography. Another good time, for some subjects, is when a storm is either threatened or just past. Look for interesting light and then use it to highlight your subject. Second: think of an image as a story in miniature – when you read a good story you usually remember the highlights and forget the non-essential details. Your images should focus attention on the important details and leave out the rest. The light poles, houses and even the tree are fillers and detract from the main subject of the mountains and sky. Look for a vantage point that will permit you to eliminate as much of the non-essential objects as possible. Third: a graduated neutral density filter can be your best friend when attempting to capture images such as this one. The filter will keep your sky color as close to real as possible while providing for the highlights and shadows in your primary subject. Learning to properly use this filter can take practice, but it really is a great tool. Fourth: select and learn to use some form of image editing software. Photoshop is the industry standard, but there are many other programs available that offer you at least the most important tools needed by photographers. A good image editing program will permit you to remove distracting elements such as the light pole and will help you to equalize color better in your image.

Please know, I am really far from being an expert at any of this. There are many people here who know a tremendous amount more than I do. But, I have struggled with the same issues you appear to be struggling with and have learned as I have come along. I hope that this helps you to get started.
