Welllllllllllllllllllll, I think I mentioned something nice along the lines of 300-500mm. Being on the sidelines helps, but you still need that extra 100mm or so to get you into the action when it's happening on the other side of the field or court or diamond. The lens you have now is ok, but only when you're working close in.

As for renting, what state do you live in? Some of the photographic equip. rental houses in NYC, Chicago and San Francisco will ship out of state as long as you give them a valid credit card number to cover the deposit.

Get the picture? ;>)

Quite frankly Evan, (and please don't take offense at this) I don't think you're experienced enough in photography to be buying equipment off e-bay. If you have no way of determining whether something is actually working or not, what the true condition is, and what questions to ask the seller then I think you'd be better off spending a couple of bucks more (if that) at KEH.com.

See if you can find what you're looking for there and call them if you've got questions about it. They're an excellent company to do biz with, their used equipment is usually much better than its rated but never less, and AND, they have a no questions asked money-back policy along with a gr8 warranty policy if something goes wrong during the first 30 days you own it.

I don't mind admitting that im unexperienced.... I understand that... Im trying to lear as much as I can. Quite frankly the pretty much only thing I use is Auto on my camera... but this is going to be my first ourchase for my camera other then a camera bag and a tripod... I never have had an SLR camera before....

Wow... I just went to KEH.com and found out the 300mm is about $800 and the 500mm is $4000.... The 500mm I was looking at was only about $100... Mark you said I needed a 300mm?

You know Evan, you get what you pay for. I don't know what you were looking at at KEH, whether it was a Sigma or Canon or whatever lens, but 800 bucks for an AF 300 sounds about right. Look around, wait awhile and keep checking there. I would think a zoomer, somwhere in the 300-500 range would be real useful to you.

Might be the right tool for the job and at the right price. See what others around here think before you score it.

Mark ... Thank you so much for your help... I also asked them about the sigma lens and they stated that it would be working with all the fatures such as auto, portrait, P, ae, stuff like that... Also they are a Sigma Athurized Dealer... and for 10-15% of the purchase price you can get insurance that will cover any breakage for three years... and it will replace the product if need be... Sounds too good to be true (the insurance) however it is provided by e-trust which is well known around the online e-market... but anyways ... if anyone has any opnions on this lens please help... I won't be buying this untill my b-day (2 months away) so I still have some time of looking around..

  Evan,
Is this the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro or the DG APO Macro?

If it's the APO version, that lens goes for about $199, so you're looking at a good deal.

If it's the non-APO version, B&H photo has it for $139 and I would recommend getting it from them. I've never heard of Camera Spot.

Have you ever purchased anything from Camera Spot before? Do you know anyone who has?

I would bet more than half the photographers here have either purchased something from B&H photo, or have at least heard that they have an excellent reputation.

I would pay an extra 10 bucks for the comfort factor. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Evan: Chris is absolutely right. I buy a lot of supplies from B&H, and I've bought my fair share of equipment from them over the years too. They're really excellent, especially if you know what you want to buy.

And sometimes, more often than not, if you find a better deal somewhere, give them a link to it and chances are they'll match or beat the price. I never heard of Camera Spot either. Wonder if it's something that "spot remover" will work on.

A lot of internet companies look like they're offering a better deal but when it comes down to it, often it isn't. Instead of manufacturer supplied accessories, say cases, or lens shades, stuff like that, they provide you with a basic unit and offer all the manufacturer added goodies for extra dough instead of as the manufacturer intended as a kit.

Also, watch out for gray market goods wherein a seller says non-usa warranty which means the product has a warranty but you need to ship it to somewhere east of Rome, Italy to get it looked at.

Have a great weekend.
Mark
