Photography Question

critiques

What is the best way to get people in the BP community to check out your gallery and give constructive critique. I don't currently have the money available to take an on-line class, but I would love to get a variety of feedback from people here. I've tried just going through and leaving other people critiques, but that doesn't seem to really help. Any advice??

The best way is to ask! Once you upload one of your photos, be the first to comment on it and select the category "Constructive Critique". Ask for the critique in the comment field. Be careful what you ask for, cause you'll get it!!!

  Hi Charity,
I think you have some nice portrait pics in your gallery. Some look like candids, but others are very nice. What do you like to shoot? By the way, I look at almost everybody's galleries, even though I don't email anyone. I really enjoy checking out other's styles, and esp looking at pics that have won. Jess

Hey Charity! I am just abeginner, but I love your photos! I think they are all great. As a matter of fact, I would love any tips you could give me! I have only started as a hobby about 3 months ago or so.

Jessica- Thank you for the compliments. I am so just starting out. The only thing that I consider a strength is my photoshop knowledge. Although, I sometimes get carried away with the filters. The critiques of the people on BP mean the world to me. Sometimes I don't agree with the people, but it helps me to stretch myself. I mean, I figure that some of my photography clients (as I may get them) will have a different eye than I do. I want to try to take pictures that other people will like, not just the pictures that reflect my personal tastes. Please, feel free to comment on anything that you see in my gallery. If it's good... I'd enjoy knowing that... but if it needs work, I would be grateful for any tips.

Mary Anne- Thank you so much! Isn't photography great fun?? Feel free to ask me specific techniques on whatever you see. I will do my best to remember how I did something. My strength is really Photoshop. The basic photography itself I am very, very new at myself. Feel free to e-mail me whenever you have a question and I will attempt to answer it.

Touchy subject with some people Charity. I believe constructive ctitism is how we improve. Lately a few folks have taken great offense of being critiqued instead of the standard "great shot" remark. My advice to you is two fold. To get remarks on your photos, remark on others. But to get the best constructive advice is find someones gallery that you admire and possible shoots the same type of things you are interested in shooting. Then send them on private message asking them advice. Remember to be thick skinned and take all advice as advice only. If you don't agree with it, disregard it. All of our tastes differ.

Charity, I've noticed that when a particularly good/interesting photo is posted people will comment. Sometimes people not commenting is a lesson learned. The advice about using the site to find photos by others that have a similar style or interest and are more experienced or have that so called WOW Factor is invaluable. When you take a photo you are particularly proud of enter it in the contest and let people view it. If it is great you'll have no shortage of comments and the judges will reward you as well.

I don't only mention Diet RockStar because they sponsor me. But have you tried Diet Rockstar...??? It's better than the regular RockStar that sells at Costco for $13.00...In fact I'll drink one for lunch

Last bit should've read "In fact I'll drink a Diet Rockstar for lunch" that way you'd've had FOUR Rockstars in there....LOLOL

Please don't take this the wrong way. But, in my experience, unless it's a love fest over your photos, you don't really want a critique. Art is art. That's all. You know it's good when you see it, and not everyone will agree. Some think Robert Maplethorpe's work is complete and utter trash. Not for it's content, but also, just the work itself. Here's another one that is controversial:http://www.paulkopeikingallery.com/artists/greenberg/exhibitions/endtimes/index.htm

You are the only one who can determine. Many of us will look at a beginners work, and just kind of piss them off because everything is technically wrong. But, the reality is that that doesn't matter. Just shoot from your heart, and make it matter. Then, it's good, it's art, and it's fun.

I guess what I am saying is judging others work, takes the fun out of it all, and adds rules to the game, for which there really aren't any.

  Hey Joe!
I read and understand your comment, and well said. When I ask for a critique, I am asking exactly for that, good or bad. The reason I ask is because I want to learn, and want to take the advice of those who have the advice to give because I am just starting out. I expect to get negative feedback because I am so new to this, and I feel that is a good way to learn as well!
