Photography Question

Canon EOS 5d & 30d

Hi there,

I am a series hobby photographer, and am 'hoping' to take it a bit further towards becoming a professional. However, I have never owned an SRL camera.

I have my eye set on 3 cameras:
Canon Rebel XT (EOS 350d); Canon EOS 5d and Canon EOS 30d - and am confused about which one to go for ! I hear that the Rebel XT 350d is not really good enough for series professional shots. I also hear that the 5d and 30d are both excellent, but that the 5d has a full frame, and over 12 pixels, etc. Is this the only main difference between these 2 cameras? (I know that the 5d is slower than the 30d, with 3 shots per second as opposed to 5 shots per second).

Up 'til now, Canon salespersons and other professional photographers have told me to forget the Rebel XT 350d, and just go for the 5d. BUT others have told me that as I am not yet professional, not to spend the extra cash and start off with the 30d, as that is practically just as good.

I need to know please, what are the advantages AND disadvantages of all of these cameras. If it is a question of choosing between the 5d and the 30d, then is the extra cash REALLY worth it for the 5d? Are they pretty straightfoward to use, or pretty complicated?

I would be using my camera for shooting weddings, landscapes, close-ups, portraits and architecture.

ANY advice would be much appreciated! Thanks !!!

The value of a camera is based on both the quality of the camera and on how skilled the photographer is at utilizing the cameras functions – as in a better camera alone will not make you a better photographer. However, a poor camera can limit your ability to utilize and grow your skills. The Canon 5D is a terrific camera and despite what some may have told you, the 30D does not have all the features of the 5D. However, the price difference – as you may already know – is substantial. The 5D is one of a few digital cameras that have a full size sensor which means that it operates more like a film camera. The difference in pixels – 12.8 for the 5D and 8.2 for the 30D - is meaningful, but, again, only you can decide it is important to you. I looked carefully at both cameras before making my decision and went with the 5D because of the sensor, the number of pixels and the ruggedness of the camera. I have been working to develop my skills for several years and was ready to make the move to a pro level camera. The 30D is considered a “pro-sumer” level camera. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this! It is a terrific camera that has the capacity to help you develop your skills and techniques and will not hold you back. The lenses that fit the 5D will fit the 30D and to a large extent, glass matters more than anything else in selecting a camera/lens combo. B&H Photo retails the 30D for around $1800 while the 5D retails for around $3000. Obviously this is a major difference and one that can, for many of us, define our decisions.

As to how easy or hard either camera is to use; well, the 5D had a slight learning curve for me, but most of this was due to switching from Minolta to Canon and learning where the controls were and how they operate. Keep in mind that the fundamentals of photography remain the same whether you are shooting with an inexpensive point and shoot or an expensive pro level camera.

Good luck making your choice.

The 30D is a great camera and the 5D is an even better camera but the glass is what is most important at those levels. If you only have $4,000 to spend then the 30D plus the Canon 70-200 2.8IS is the way to go or maybe the non (IS) and a Canon 17-40L plus the 30D. If you've got the cash then buy the 5D or hell go for the 1Ds MarkII and the lenses. But be careful because I just found out that AUTO mode has nothing to do with my car!!! Damn
