Dynamic range I am just about to replace my Sony DSC F707 with either a Sony DSC R1 or the new Sony A100 DSLR. My concern is dynamic range. Which of the three camers mentioned would give me the greatest dynamic range?

Actually, I just read a review of the Sony A100 DSLR in a Digital Imaging magazine yesterday, and this sounds like one amazing camera. Along with image stabilization built into the camera so you don't have to buy IS lenses, this camera also has Dynamic Range Optimization (DRO). The DRO is built-in software that analyzes the data before writing the JPEG to memory and gives more shadow detail while preserving the brighter highlights. To tell you the truth, if I had the money I would probably spring for this camera myself (my unsteady hands would love the IS).

Thank you for your answer. I agree with your finding with the A100, but I have the feeling that the DSC R1 will do all I need it to do, with the convenience of one complete camera, one (excellent) lens, and no bagful of lens'. I still remember my Nikon days of camera bags full of lens'.
