Photography Question

Estella Aguilar

permission for practice

i recently spoke to a pastor at the near by church. I thought it would be a good idea to leave my business card for people that had events going on.I'm still a beginner. so I know I need practice. the question is, how do I approch people that are getting married, quienceneras, bastisums, etc. to ask them for permission to partcipate in taking photos of thier special day? of course I'm not gonna do anything with the photos,or try to sell any, but is there a contract I would need them to sign. I dont want to invade someones privacy. they might think I'm kind of a weirdo or I just might have my lights punched out. hope to hear something soon. estella

Well, you've got a real dilemma here. You really can't practice on someones wedding, especially if they have hired someone to shoot it without that someones permission.

My suggestion is that you practice on non-events, get real comfortable with the work, develop your skills and THEN offer your services for hire with the event coordinator at the church. The alternative Estella is to apprentice with another photographer.

Take it light.

Estella,

I am in the same boat as you, just wanting to get out there and get some experience. I am living out of my home country so I have no family to practice on. I have been learning a lot but now feel that I need some more hands-on work, I need experience actually working and dealing with people.

Today I went ahead and gave out flyers to people advertising free photography. I said that I was a student photographer looking to gain experience in my field and that I would love to photograph their family events. I said that I would provide them with a high resolution CD, ready for printing.

People may say not to sell yourself short but for right now I just need to get out there and learn. I figure that photography is a long term learning experience and I don't expect to just jump into the field. We all have to start somewhere.

I may not get anything from this but then again I might. Just an example of what you can try.
