i want to buy a 17-40 for my canon rebel. the cost of the rebel is 800.00. the cost of the tamaron 17-40 is 400.00. I will be doing my first wedding pics in oct.i was told the only difference between both lenses was the speed, but that the quality of the photos will be the same. can anyone confirm this info. thanks stella

I thought that I just read somewhere that Tamron went out of business?

  You read wrong.
The Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM is sized for 35mm film frame and the 1-series EOS digitals. The Digital Rebel/Rebel XT and other digitals use a smaller sized sensor. Lenses sized for it can have some size and cost advantages. The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II is one such lens. While it does not have the weather-proof build and USM autofocus motor that the EF 17-40 has, it is just as good optically, has a longer zoom range, and is 1 stop faster maximum aperture.
