I am buying a new digital. I need help deciding which to buy (I am a film girl myself) The 2 choices are an Olympus 500 or Canon EOS ~ both SLR. Any input?

  Michelle,
Are you using a film SLR now? Do you have any lenses that you would like to keep using? This is usually one of the first considerations many photographers make when moving to a digital SLR.

I was using a Canon EOS 35mm SLR, and had a couple of decent lenses when I bought the Canon Digital Rebel. I was able to get started with the lenses that I had, then save up while researching what lenses I wanted to get next.

If you have no current equipment to tie you to a particular brand, then what you should do next is get to a camera store and get your hands on these cameras to see how they feel to you. How a camera feels in your hands, and how the control layout feels to you are important subjective considerations that you can't tell by comparing specs on paper or asking other people for their opinions.

Yes, I have a Canon EOS 35mm SLR right now, however, I have only the standard lens left (my others broke~not fixable, long story) I am buying a Tamron 300mm lens as well, and I know it's interchangeable, so my current equipment isn't a factor. Also, I did go and check out the digitals, I liked the way the Olympus felt in my hands, however the Canon felt good too. My current is a Canon and I have had good luck with it. However, I like the Olypus, but have never owned one. I was hoping for input from people on both camera's, if they like or don't like it and why. Sorry for blabbering!!

When you say that the Tamron lens is interchangeable, I'm not sure if you really understand what that means.

If you buy a Tamron lens for the Canon EOS mount, it will work with your film Canon and with a Canon EOS Digital. It will NOT work with an Olympus digital. So, unless you plan on never using your Canon film camera again, it could still play a part in your decision.

An exception to the above would be if you bought a lens that was designed for digital cameras only, then it would not work on the Canon film camera. That's a whole different issue, though.

My opinion, for what it's worth . . . I've used lots of different cameras over the years, and my preference definitely is for Canon cameras, and Canon and Sigma lenses.
