I shoot with the Canon 20D, which is an 8mp camera... what is the largest picture I can print and still have great quality? I also shoot RAW.
Thanks,
Joan

300 DPI is pretty much the standard for great prints, though higher would look slightly better if you look very closely, and even 200 DPI looks pretty darn good. I'm pretty sure that for 8MP, an 8" x 12" print is about 300 DPI, but even a 16" x 24" print should look pretty reasonable.

If you shoot in RAW and use the Canon-provided software, you really should know the answer.

Use the Transfer to Photoshop tool and you'll create a 16-bit, 45-50 MB file that can be saved as a PSD or TIFF file. You may or may not want to do some additional editing. Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Photoshop 7.0 lose some functionality with the 16-bit file; you can convert the file to an 8-bit image to return to full finctionality.

When I convert the RAW files I shoot with my Canon 30D, I find the 45-50 MB files more than adequate to print 13X19 prints on my Canon i9900. I'm sure these files would be more than adequate to make larger sizes; but 13x19 is as large as I can make or need.

And, this is the reason I can't see why any non-Pro really "needs" more than an 8.2 mexapixel sensor.

My RAW files are 8.5MB as downloaded to my computer. If I process them using the Adobe RAW plug-in with PSE 4.0, I can size a file to, say 8X12 at 300 dpi, and then make excellent prints up to 13X19 by simply making scaling changes in the Print Screens.

All [or, at least most] inkjet printers are set to print at 300 dpi [note that's DPI, not PPI.] You should still set your file settings at no less that 240 ppi and no more than 320 ppi before printing. If you try print at settings below 240, you'll get pixilation for sure.

I have the 8mp rebel xt and have printed 16x20 and 20x24 with great quality. Not every picture I take can be produced this big, but it is possible.
