Top ten tips please(!!) for total newcomer

I would like to learn artistic photography but am a little daunted at the prospect. What is the best way to do it. I think I have a good 'eye', but have no understanding of the practical side of photography. I would be grateful if people could tell me a ten point plan of key things to do/learn at the beginning. eg (1)buy this camera (2)take this type of course etc

I would appreciate it thank you.
David

  Hi David,
Welcome to BetterPhoto! You've certainly come to the right place! There are lots of resources here:

1) Read! This includes BetterPhoto's articles, free photo newsletters, etc. Check out our Resources for Photographers page ... tons of options there.

2) Study good photography. The monthly contest here is a good start. For any given month, choose the categories of contest finalists that most interest you. Check out the light, composition, perspective, etc.

3) Check out our online photography ourses right here at BetterPhoto. A good class can steer you in the right direction - and can fill in technical knowledge gaps and help you break out of the snapshot stage. To help you figure out which class to take, we have a cool new feature to help you find the course that's right for you: BetterPhoto Course Calculator.

4) Your camera's instruction manual. If you aren't familiar with all the bells and whistles, then re-read the manual. In fact, as your knowledge and experience grows, review it again from time to time.

5) Get out and shoot whenever possible. Experiment with settings, etc., and if you think you'll forget later, jot down what you're doing ...to refer to later. This can be in terms of exposure, focusing, or whatever.

6) If you're in a market for a new camera, then try our Camera Calculators, which will give you a good idea of the type of camera that might be right for you.

Well, David, perhaps this isn't 10, but there's plenty here to get you started. Have fun!
Kerry
