Bulk Film and the Canon Rebel 2000

I own a Canon EOS Rebel 2000, and I have recently invested in all the stuff I need to develop my own B&W film.

My question is this:

I own a Canon Rebel 2000, and I am considering bulk film to greatly reduce my film costs. Does hand-rolled film work in this camera? I have heard that cameras with motorized film advance don't work, is there any truth in this? Will my camera be able to count out an odd number of exposures, ie 20 exposures on a roll as opposed to the standard 24?

Thanks for the insight!

When you load film into the Rebel 2000 it pre-winds the film out of the can onto the take-up reel. As you take pictures the film is wound back into the can.

When pulling film out of the can the camera uses a combination of an infrared emitter/sensor to count sprocket holes (and hence frames), and a tension sensor. The camera will pre-wind until the earlier of (a) sensing the tension of the end of the roll, or (b) 36 frames have been counted. As long as you securely anchor the end of the film in the can, you can load any number of frames from say 10 to 36. In no case will the Rebel 2000 pull more than 36 frames from the can, so don't bother trying to load more.

I own the Canon EOS Rebel GII and almost always when I load in Fuji Superia Reala with 36 exposures it gives me 37. So, maybe it is possible to go over.
