Photography Question

Bob Cammarata

Is Anyone Else Fed Up!!

This statement is on this Q&A Forum for all to see:

"The guys that still shoot film need viagra and will tell you that back in the day they could go 3times a night. What they didn't tell you was that they were alone with a 5gallon bucket of vasaline with a scoop bedside their bed. Shake it off old farts, digital is IT!!!!!"

What gives?
Have we sunk so low as to allow these types of commentaries to be aired in a public forum?

Let's try to keep it professional and a bit more civil.

(...Some among us might have young sons or daughters that also visit this site.)

Hey Bob: First, I'd just consider the moronic source of that comment and pass it off as someone living their life at the shallow end of the gene pool. I'm one of those guys who still shoots about 98% film, I process most of my black and white film myself, and haven't yet experienced a need for any male enhancing drugs. In fact, I was going to get bumper stickers printed that read something like:
"Real iron men use iron cameras with silver based emulsions, not plastic cameras that need pixels."

Relax. It's only his words against our words and levels of intelligence. We win.
Mark

I'm with Mark... I don't even need to see the thread to know who wrote it. In my year on the site, my experience has been that pretty much everything of his is hot air at best, questionable content for BP at worst. I've found that over time, you learn to skip over each of his posts, until they become basically invisible filler, while you move on to read what the grown-ups have actually contributed ;) It is unfortunate that he has no concern for what other readers think, nor any interest in contributing to the community here in any meaningful way. Try not to let it get under your skin, and train your eye to skip his posts entirely.

Yeah, I agree Christopher. Besides, it'll give his psychiatric meds for bipolar disorder time to kick in. LOL !!!

Later guys !! Be well. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Mark, I would like to buy that bumper sticker from you when it is available because I am still shooting 98.73% film (the 1.27% I borrowed my wife's DC, her very FIRST camera) ;)

Like Christopher, I don't need to see the original post to see who posted it. I really don't have any problem with him knocking film but I wish he would leave off the snide comments about Viagra. After all, I have a little stock in Pfizer!

This is not a professional website. It's just a fun forum. The only way to have a professional forum is to require accountability. The only way you do that is by requiring registration of your name, and a credit card. And, having a few rules, such as, you must post your name, not some silly name. And, the owner would have the right to refuse anyone membership. Then you would have a civil and professional web forum where people discuss stuff.

  OK...so it's a "fun forum".

All I ask is that we all try a little harder to censor our comments and diatribes and try to think of the younger visitors to this great site many call home.

THINK...before you click that send button about who you might offend.

  I agree, Bob.

After all, it's not life and death here. It's just taking pictures. Why would someone get so polarized on how to do it?

I also don't even need to see the post to know who said it. He has been getting very bad about doing these types of posts. If most of this stuff bugs you, just don't even read his posts like Chris said.

Joe B.: Unfortunately, even having the rules you suggest would not ensure civility or maturity in posts. I belong to another forum that does require approved registration and that is moderated. In order to join you have to fill out a form and provide info that is supposed to screen out people who only want to stir up trouble, insult others and ruin the experience for the honest participants. Even so there are still people who seem hell-bent to make the forum experience negative. The good thing about the Internet, IMO, is that is provides a means for people from around the globe to share thoughts, ideas and experiences. BP is a wonderful site that offers everyone from the very beginner to the highly experienced pro a place to talk photography. That, to me, is fantastic and highly rewarding. The other side of the positive features of the Internet are the negative things – it is difficult, if not impossible, to prevent someone from using services, such as BP, as their own personal means for insulting, harassing and generally annoying others. Some people simply need an outlet for expressing their contempt and disrespect for others. They would not or cannot express this same contempt in “real life” so they come to sites such as this one. I’m not sure what can be done to stop them, other than the rest of us simply ignoring their posts and not responding even when they get really nasty. These people won’t go away because they are too dependent upon what ever charge they get from being nasty and mean, but if we stop responding to their idiocy perhaps they will decide to head somewhere else.

As to the original post – which, thankfully, I missed – that is precisely the type remark someone wishing to stir up trouble makes! Why even respond? There are much more intelligent discussions we can have about the benefits of film versus digital. I seriously doubt if anyone who knows much of anything about photography is likely to make such a comment in the first place! All it was meant to do was to stir up this furor.

I totally agree with Irene about ignoring them, but just yesterday I realized that won't always work either. I received an "opinion" on my 2nd place win the other day. The member not only scoffed at the image and the judge's decision but uploaded his own sarcastic version of "abstract art" to my photo's discussion thread. I ignored what was posted and ask Heather to remove it which she kindly did. Today the guys comes back for more. Well, if ignoring him doesn't work then I guess I'll try my hand at responding in kind. Soooo, I guess this makes me fed up too!

Realistically there is no way to moderate a site this size. This is probably why BP puts the Report as Malicious Thread at the bottom of all discussions. Even then I'd think it would be a royal headache if someone actually has to manually remove such discussions.

Jeeze, Sharon – that is awful! How dare he criticize your winning image in that negative fashion? Everyone who posts an image here, for a contest or simply in their gallery, needs to be prepared to hear constructive criticism – frankly, that is part of what I like about sharing my images – but, to behave in that fashion is nasty, ugly and extremely inappropriate. I may not always appreciate someone’s work, and there have been times when I have wondered what others see in an image; however, even when asked, I try to be positive in my critiques and to make suggestions that are helpful, not hurtful. That is what I would hope most people here do – and, at least in my own experience, what they do. I rarely comment upon portraits because I almost never shoot those type images and feel completely unqualified to offer an opinion. Similarly, if I do not understand an image, I ask for clarification or simply pass over the image and go on with my life. What a complete jerk! Unfortunately, as you point out, ignoring this jerk isn’t going to make him go away. Responding in kind may not work either, but I can understand why you might try. Sometimes it feels as if we are the adults trying to deal with a completely spoiled and rude child, doesn’t it?

Thanks much Irene & Craig! I appreciate the kind words. I didn't just write a response and hit the submit button without thinking. After ignoring him the first time and contacting BP to have his remarks removed I decided people like that needed to be advised that their behavior is just unacceptable (not that it matters to them or they wouldn't do it). I've seen this happen on POTDs as well. No one has to appreciate everything that is awarded a win, but it's pretty disrespectful to say so after something has been recognized. Bet they wouldn't have the guts to critique one of the judge's images like that but when they criticize a win they might as well do the same thing IMHO.

Irene, I belong to a pro forum that kicks people out and doesn't let them back on. that deletes their silly posts, and that simply doesn't tolerate anything but professional behavior. So, I disagree with you. If it is properly moderated, and properly managed, it can be civil. The way it is here, it's just a free-for-all. Which is why I remain anonymous.

I don't agree that it's a free-for-all here, but I do think that they could be stricter. I think that if we got a few members to moderate, it could be a lot better. On some other forums that I'm on that are member-moderated, posts like the origanel, and some other useless ones from the same member, would be considered spam, and deleted on the spot. If the BP staff wants to do this, I would be willing to be one of the moderators.

I agree that the offending post was inappropriate (to put it mildly).

I just want to point out that several respondents in this thread made inappropriate remarks about bipolar disorder, in particular, and mental health in general.

I know some people with bipolar disorder and it's no laughing matter. General comments about mental health, mental capacity, etc., are also inappropriate.

Although I haven't been on line very long I do agree that Rude and Crude have nothing to do with mental illness and surely have no place in public. It is to bad some people think that bad languge and outragious behavior is normal. I am so glad most of the people I have read have been very helpful and very down to earth.

i guess you read my bio jane.
oh but a bit of levity can go a long way.how do we get to know each other and help at the same(sane) time?
gravity also inhibits us from not being down to earth.ah brevity or bs.
so your saying no more teasing blind people on how they park their car?
kinda unfair..

I seem to remember, not long after joining this site, coming across one of his post in which he made an open apology to everyone on this site for using alias names and he openly admitted that most of his answers to peoples questions in the forum he stole from others. Oh, yeah, and that he found God and was a changed peron.
What happened to all that? In the Christian realm, they call it "Back Slider".

I also think that none of the comments, were meant to offend anybody, and if they did, I'm sure we're all sorry. They were just meant to poke fun at our resident name-changer/trouble-maker. :-)
