Why not use the white balance settings in your camera?

They work well, if a bit expensive. They allow you to set a custom white balance for the scene, as well as working as an incident light meter. The white balance settings on the camera are only an aproximation, and for some kinds of lighting (e.g. stadium lights) don't work at all.
