Creating Silhouette

Hi, for all you PhotoShop experts (for I am DEFINITELY not one of them)...is there a way to change an image to become a silhouette? In my many years, I have yet to experiment one of these shots and just wondered if I don't get it "just right" if I can alter it until I perfect it. Thanks in advance!

Sure you can. I don't know exactly how I would do it ... I'd have to see the specific image and start experimenting from there.

If you tried to get a silhouette and nearly made it, adjust the levels in PS by dragging the dark slider to the right and maybe even dragging the light slider to the left. The extra contrast should help.

If you ever have an image you want to tweak, post the specific image in the discussion board and I bet you'll get more answers and loads of great suggestions. For the majority of the time, I see people asking to see the specific image.

... and of course, keep trying to get it right in-camera ... I think nothing beats doing it right the first time. You learn a lot by the time you finally do get it right, and you save yourself loads of editing time for subsequent shots.

the best thing you can do is get it right in camera. to do this meter the subject and then give it two stops less exposure. this should render it completly black. if you think of it in zones it my help, your camera when you meter with it gives you a zone 5 reading which is medium gray. if you want your subject black you need zone 3 two stops less. same thing with a white subject if you want it white you need about zone 7 which is two stops more exposure.
check out ansal adams the negative the chapter on the zone system. best thing I ever did was to get a grasp on this system. I had to read it about three times but once you start to understand it it makes so much sence and the exposure half still apply today. you can ignore the development half because it only applys to b&w neg. film.

Thank you Cherylann and Jason, for the tips! I really appreciate it! I've gotten a silhouette before, but mostly out of luck so I'm going to experiment until I get it just right. Thank you very much for the tips though!
