Buying first camera-Canon Rebel 2000 or Elan EOS 7

I am looking to buy my first SLR camera and came across your website. Thank you for all the great information posted here and all the great feedback. I am trying to decide between the Canon Rebel 2000 and Elan EOS 7E cameras. Questions:

a. I will be taking pictures of my one and four year old the most but would like to kake more professional pictures as time goes by. What is the best camera that would grow with me and what lens should I begin with?

b. Can you recommend a good internet company to buy from that is reliable?

c. Is it safe to buy a gray market camera?

Thank you for any information you can provide. I have been scouring this site and it truly has been helpful.

  Hi, Amanda.

(a) I think the Rebel 2000 has most of what you're looking for, though the Elan has some more professional-type features and you can grow a little further with it. But if you don't need those features, you won't miss them. The standard EF 28-80 (or 28-90) f/3.5-5.6 is fine to start with. It is not a great lens, but it's not bad either and is very inexpensive (no more than a 50 f/1.8) and allows you to explore where your interests lie while you save for a better lens that serves that interest. Some better (but more expensive) zooms to start with would be the either Canon's EF 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM or EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM; or Tamron's 28-200 f/3.8-5.6 XR or 24-135 f/3.5-5.6.

I would highly recommend buying an attachable flash, like the Canon 420EX or a similarly featured 3rd party model that will bounce flash. The small built-in flash firing straight on will not give you the "more professional pictures" that you're looking for.

(b) I have personally used B&H Photo Video (www.bhphotovideo.com) many times and recommend them.

(c) probably. I've purchased international warranty (grey market) lenses from B&H with no problems, but I like the extra security of the maker's USA warranty on the more complicated camera. B&H offers their own warranty coverage on grey market items, I don't know about other retailers.

  Hi Amanda,

I have just been looking at some threads on photo.net about grey market Nikon, and it seems to me that Nikon in USA don't want to have anything to do with it, I dont know if the same goes for Canon. I thougt you need to know.

Hi Amanda, I would never buy anything Grey market! A rebel 2000 is a great starter camera. You can always trade up for a more professional model. and, stick with the Canon Lenses too. donnarae
