Photography Question

Tween Photography

My daughter is going to turn 11 this year and I would like to try and take a nice portrait of her. I've attempted...but not successfully...to capture her in some poses, but am not happy with the outcome. I've looked through MANY finalist and winning shots, but so many of these have toddlers or teens in the shots. Any suggestions or examples of posed tween shots?

  Hi Margie,

Look in my gallery of the images of Keshia. She is eleven years old. I have lots of images of her in my gallery with different poses, locations and hair styles.

You can also go to her website where other photographers have photographed her for some different ideas.

Margie look at 1. clothing make sure it all ironed and looks good with her skin tones.

2.Look at locations carefully and make sure you have beautiful backgrounds.

3. Make sure the hair is done nicely and if you use makeup just use a little bit to enhance the features. You might get a professional to do this for you if you really serious about getting really nice images. Hair and makeup artists are wonderful people.

4. Make sure the area is picked up from any junk laying around.

5.Pick props carefully to look good with the clothes and location you are shooting in.

These are just a few idea's for you. If you can any questions feel free to email me.

  Thanks to both of you.

Kerby, it scares me to think of my daughter looking like Keisha! Even though she is going to be 11, I still want her to be my little girl!

Mellanie, I've checked out Audrey's website...it's beautiful. Both Kerby's and Audrey's sites have given me ideas. Now lets see if I can implement them!

  Hi Margie,

With Keshia I have worked and taken images of Keshia for over a year and half.

Half the time the hair was not done and no make up at all. I was getting the same type of images over and over.

Her mom is a wonderful hair and makeup artist. She has been in the business for over thirty years and ten of those years was working on models.

So I sat down with her mom and said I like to take the images to a different level. So Barb started doing the hair and makeup because Keshia wants to do modeling and needs portfolio images.

It just depends on the type of images you want.

I just feel a real good hair and makeup artist can take the images from snapshots to real photography.

The other thing these tweens are easier to work with. There is very little attitude you have to deal with. Keshia is a dream to work with.

I have always loved candid shots...so make up and hair are probably out of the scenerio for now. Of course give my daughter a couple of years, I'm sure those will be the first two things of importance on her list. Until the, I need the poses more so than anything. I still want to capture the early years, without making her out to be a toddler. I do agree that her hair needs to be VERY neat, so that will be on my mind!

I struggle with the same thing, Margie. My daughter will be a teen in a few weeks but I want her to look natural and not too mature for her age. She just asked me tonight for a birthday photo shoot so this thread should help give me some ideas too...
