Photography Question

Alicia McMahill

is it going to far?

I had an idea to post a flyer or a few bc's at the local (45min away) hospital for picts of new borns, and their moms. something.. photos in your house of you and your new arrival. with info on how to get a hold of me and that sort of thing.... I don't know if they I can post ina doctors office or not but I was thinking of doing it there too if I can get the offices to ok it. But what for prices? $25.00 for the trip and then they can order prints? I have a digital and thought I could do most of the printing at home. anyone on here that does that? Is it cost evective to send them out... where do I order the paper that has no pro on the back so they can't scan it at walmart...? There are so many questions I would love to talk with some one that has done this or is doing something like it now...I guess anyone on here that does portaits knows:] Anyone willing to listen to me ask tons of questions? I have great ideas for picts just need some help to get the people to call me:} Anyone interested? Please ....pretty please?

Hey Alicia. I'm not exactly doing it now but I'm planning on doing on-location photography as well. I think $25 is a bit low but it all depends on the area you live in. You have to do the research. I think that a lot of doctor's offices probably already offer photographers services. I currently work at Olan Mills and I know that we give coupons out (for free photos) at hospitals and doctor's offices. But you can try maybe getting a smaller practice. It was also suggested to me by my sis-in-law (and new mom) to try places like the baby gym and what not.

As for the paper... You should probably come up with a company name and logo to put in the corner of your photos. Most people who see that won't print them, regardless what it says on the back. Actually I took a photo of my nephew, once, that had no logo or mark of professionalism on it... and my brother's mom-in-law tried to print it at a store and they wouldn't let her. Places are getting a lot stricter about that. So I think the name and logo should suffice.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the info. I live in a very rual part of colorado. The town I am in has one stop light and a clinic, no hospital, so I was thinking of a few of the towns around me that are bigger and have a bit of compition I understand. Ihad both of my kids in one of them and never remember seeing anything like what I am offering. I got the thing from Sears and that sort of thing where you have to take everyone in and do it that way but I am thinking of something on location that is a bit nicer for the mom, dad, and baby.
And I think $25. is low too. but I am thinking that if they have one kid they may have others or remember me and use me for other family things, or refer me to other friends.
And since I am just getting started I think it is enough for me to get there and home (if gas prices are still around 3.00 for a bit:}). Then something for the prints and ....what?

I read Vik Orenstein's book about starting your own photography business (I highly recommend it) and she said to do research on the prices in your area... and even though you're a beginner... put yourself in the middle. Why? If you're too low, people will think that you're no good (they probably don't really know how new you are) and if you're too high... nobody will come unless you already have followers. Plus, if you start too low, it shocks and scares customers away if you suddenly make a big jump in price to something more average. I thought it was good advice.

And don't forget that you want to get paid for your time. You're charging $25 for travel, basically (admittedly, my own fee isn't much higher)... but what if they only get a few prints? Will it have been worth it to you? You should come up with a basic package that, if they only get that, then it still will have been worth your time... whatever that amount is.

Just my two cents!
