Photography Question

Charles E. Mann

what is the difference between muslin and canvas?

Hello everyone, your help in the past has been very valuable, thank you. I'm looking to buy a backdrop for all around use my first one probably will be solid in color. My problem is I don't know the diffences in muslin or canvas. is one better than one? are there different reasons to have one over the other? are there other types besides these? thanks in advance. God bless you. Charles

Both fabrics are made of cotton weaves, and often times of hemp or flax.
I believe canvas is a heavier and coarser weave than muslin.

  PS -
In terms of photographic backgrounds, Canvas is rather stiff, and meant to be kept flat, other than the bend going from the wall to the floor.
Muslin, on the other hand, is thinner and softer, much like a bedsheet, and can be folded, overlapped, pleated, and crinkled in any fashioned desired.
