Shadows in portrait work

I've done wedding photography for a long time and would now like to branch out into portrait work. I'm having trouble with shadows in my early attempts. I use studio "hot lights" (not strobe). . usually bouncing into umbrellas. Can someone give me a "laundry list" of possible fixes to the shadow problems. Thanks

I'm not clear as to what shadows you are having problems with. If you are talking about shadows on the background behind the subject then the easiest fix is to move them farther from the background. If you are talking about shadows on the face it should be fairly easy to simply move the lights until the shadows disappear or use reflectors for fill.
