Photography Question

jay sturdevant

Are my images marketable?

I know travel photos aren't the most lucrative or sought after images but I have several thousand and would like to try to market them. Can anyone with experience in the stock industry comment on how suitable my images might be and if so possibly suggest an agency that might be a good fit? The file sizes range from 40-100Mb, but will fall below an operation like Getty's 12MP camera threshold. I have examples on a website, which is far from perfect, so please no design critiques, I need to focus on the images .

-many thanks

Your pictures are awesome!!! I added your site to my faves and will look at every one of them later!

I think they would do awesome in all areas...stock, mags and mostly fine art!

Take a look at Jim Zuckerman's "Making money with your Photography"...I just finished up and it is a great class....learn so much!

You're kidding, right? Are they marketable?? Can you say National Geographic? You sure as heck don't need us to tell you how good these are!

Jay, I agree with Rob and Carolyn - your pictures are superb! What an amazing body of work - you've seen so much of the world, and captured it magnificently! Good luck with actually making some money out of your images!

Thanks for the encouragement and for taking the time to look everyone. No false modesty here, I'm really trying to get the courage up to do something with my photos. I guess you never see your own images as other people do, and I do look at my stuff sometimes and ask myself is it worthy. Your friends and family always say it's great but other than that I exist in a bit of a vaccum as far as photographers go, it is nice to get some input.

Ahhhh…Jay?? Good grief Man! Listen, I’m a writer, hoping to one day add photographer to this title. I do some travel writing and I have to tell you that if my images were as good as yours I would feel qualified to add photographer to my business card. There is no question that breaking into the travel writing/photography biz can be difficult; however, you really do have talent and should go for it! Put together some of your images in a basic portfolio and get your work out there. I’d suggest starting with some of the more open markets; magazines such as Adventure Travel; Transitions Abroad or Nomad. These are magazines that actively seek out new talent and that are easier to break into. There is another magazine that I cannot, for the life of me remember the name of, but they specialize in articles and photos of places that are off the beaten track and appeal travelers who want a more authentic travel experience. Try doing an online search under alternative travel or something of this type. Another idea is to visit any good size bookstore/newsstand and look over the collection of travel type magazines. See what they feature and if your type work would fit into their agenda. BTW: I am so jealous of all the places you have been! How do you get to travel to so many amazing places and how did you get to be so terrific with a camera? Good luck!

Irene

Irene, I'm a Yank living in the UK, but I'm missing my wide open spaces. The Yellostone-Teton region is my favorite place, thanks for the pick-me-up. As for how I've travelled so much, as an American, long term travel only happens if you make it happen, I personaly have sacrificed stabilityin order to gain freedom. I have run into a few who had sabbaticals from work but they are rare, it is just how our culture is. I've had a lot of comments about my writing from people who I've sent travel posts to, maybe I will try to sell a story/images piece to a mag and see what happens, thanks for the motivation.

Jay – you echo my own sentiments. Sometimes I think that as Americans we have chosen to sacrifice our very souls for what passes as “stability”. There is such an ethic about working hard, keeping your nose to the grindstone, never taking vacations and avoiding appearing as if you have dreams beyond providing for your family. I admire anyone who has the guts to buck this system and to go off adventuring and seeing more of the world than is right outside their own backyard. Personally, I left a stable job that I had held for almost 25 years in order to pursue my dream of writing, traveling and doing photography. A lot of people think I’m crazy and many predict I’ll end up homeless, but for me this is the only way to live. Good luck and just go for it!
