Photography Question

Weddings

Good Morning everybody
My niece is getting married next month, She has asked me to shoot her wedding (biting my nails now) I have never done a wedding, I explained this to her, I do not shoot People very often, I explained this to her too. However, she has always looked at my photos and knows I am who she wants…… I have read through some of the wedding topics, I so want to do a great job for her and her new husband…. Can I get some of the does and don’ts of shooting a wedding and party to follow? Thank you

It's not life and death. And, it sounds like they don't have a photographer. So, go for it.

As long as you are honest about your skill level, I guess it's OK.

Every event is unlike any other, so there are no formulas to follow. If there were, it would be easy, and everyone would be doing it.

If you want to enjoy the wedding, offer to just take some photos, and relax the rest of the wedding. If you are going to be the official photographer, forget about enjoying the event. You will be running ragged all day and night covering everything. And, you really wont get to be a part of the wedding. You are an outsider looking in.

It's sad to me that family members and friends ask other family members or friends to do this, and the family member or friend does it because they 'think it will be fun' and it winds up being a ton of work. And, becomes a chore, and is sometimes, totally unappreciated by the family or friend. I have many friends in the biz who will not shoot family or friends weddings at any price, or free. The reason is many-fold. I generally say no to family and friends.

I always say, just go and enjoy the wedding. Take a few snaps, as you would if you were there anyway.
