Photography Question

Ralph Enstad

Lense focusing speed

At this point I have used fixed focal length lenses for my high school sports shots viewable at renstad.com. The thought of upgrading to the Nikon zoom vibration reduction lenses is on my mind. Two lenses, the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 80-400 f/4.5-5.6, are being considered. Can anyone help me evaluate either or both of these lenses in terms of speed of focus as compared to my fixed focal length lenses. The D70 is my current camera with an upgrade to the D200 under consideration. Thanks.

Between the two, the Silent-Wave AF motor and f/2.8 maximum aperture of the 70-200 is going to give the fastest and most accurate autofocus. Used on DSLR it should have plenty of reach for most sports. If you need more, it'll work fine with the teleconverters.
