Photography Question

Robyn Gwilt

Robyn B needs some comments pls:)

Hi all - As some might know I've recently compeleted a beautiful trail (The Otter), along the Garden Route in South Africa - I've uploaded some pix to my gallery and would welcome comments/crits - I've printed many of them, and on paper they've come out great and sharp, but on BP they don't all look great :( Some are pano's and have been stitched, they've all been slightly enhanced and sharpened in PSE4 - I know the comp is not just about winning (ok, it is!), but wonder if our beautiful SA landscapes stand a chance in the competition/photo of the day, or are the N. Americans favoured? Ok in a rambling way, I'd really appreciate some comments :)

Robyn, if this answers your question: I'm a Canadian, but over half of my medaled images were made in Europe, and the places are in the info with the image. (See first two pages of my premium gallery).

Will have a look at your gallery this evening.

Robin, Blue Satin is a very pretty shot but it is not level. If you want a chance at a finalist with it, you need to use the PS leveling tool. I suggest using the botton water line as the base of the falls for reference.

Thanks Dennis for taking the time - when I cropped the pic I also though that, but the water is level, its the rocks that slope! Here is a Portrait shot of the same falls and you can see what I mean.

  Robyn,

You are very serious about shooting. Why dont you use "Bridge"? Also you should definitely get the 5d: it is so quiet, lightweight, brilliant LCD, better with noise (I got to try one this week)5 star experience. Also check out the ASUKA albums (cheap and they look awesome).

South Africa Rocks!

Thanks Brady - whats 'bridge' is that Pictbridge? Heard of it, but don't know much about it. I'd have to get sell a kidney to buy a 5D - they're about USD4000.00 :) Will look for ASUKA - are they online albums? I guess I should also start shooting in RAW, but haven't taken that step yet either :) I'm going for a cortisone shot in my elbow tomorrow, the weight of my (little 350D), plus battery pack, flash and 70-200 L lens has given me tennis elbow LOL. Yeah SA's scenery and photo opportunities rock (have you visited here?) but we have a few crime problems at the moment, which are not making me happy!!

If you saw a 5d shot held next to your xt shot you would understand. The focus looks soft on cheaper cameras. Also the colors are a little muddy. Go into debt if you have to, the 5D will pay you back and you'll be alot happier with your shots. Composition is great.

Yeah the crime thing sucks, just don't go out alone at night and you'll be fine. Also get a safe bolted to the floor in your home and get some silica packets for the moisture. I have my stuff in a safe behind a locked deadbolt door that says "Danger High Voltage".

$4000? Get it from B&H right now for $2800 and get a $300 rebate before July 15.

For shooting Raw, PSCS2 bridge is very quick.

Get used to the physical problems.
Arthitis in the neck from the camera strap, back pain from carrying all that stuff and standing 10 to 12 hrs. Wrist problems from using the keyboard for 40 hrs editing after the wedding.

What do good wedding photographers charge in your area before I give you a super list of things to get.

List of important stuff

5D or Better for main camera
580ex with diffuser (lighsphereII)
backup batteries (2500 rechargeable)
70-200L
16-35mm (wide angle)
24-70mm
back-up camera 20D or better

All with stop down to 2.8

extras I'll mention later (if you have room for more)

Eish, thats still R21 280.00 excl. all the insurance, delivery, shipping costs - but I am working on it, as I definitely need a 2nd digital camera! (don't faint, I only have 1!!!) I have the 580 EX, with the plastic diffuser that goes over it), got 4 batteries - Canon and generic, 70-200 L, 17-70 wide (2.8-4.5), so got quite a lot of the stuff!! Wedding prices here vary hugely from about R5 000.00 (USD/R about 7.5 to R1.00 at the moment) up to R15 000. If you google wedding photographers in Johannesburg, some of them give you pricing on line - but its a real mixed bag in terms of prices/whats offered. Problem is, I do this part-time, so do all my editing etc., at night, AND unfortunately run around with teenagers, doing lifting - they only get their licence here when they're 18, and I have a reluctant 18 year old driver!
Anyway, off to bed, will check in the morning - thanks to all for comments. Glad to see I've got quite a bit of the right stuff though in terms of equipment - now I need to win the Lottery !!!
