All purpose lens for rebel xt

Could someone please point me towards a quality "walking around" lens that can be bought for <300? I'm leaning towards either the Tamron 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Di-II LD Macro or the Sigma 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 DG Compact Aspherical Macro, but I'm open to suggestions.

Forgive me if I'm off base here, or if you're already aware, but don't forget about the sensor in the Rebel (ie, that 1.6x factor); a 28mm lens will not yield the same wide angle results on that camera, as it would on a 35mm film, or full-sensor digital camera.

Good advice by Nathaniel, but of the recommended lenses, only the 18-125 offers wide angle flexibility. As Christopher noted, zooms starting at 24mm or 28mm are too long for a "walking around" lens on an APS-C sized sensor like the Rebel XT. A zoom of ~18mm-50mm on the XT corresponds to the traditional walking around range of 28-80 on a 35mm film camera. For under $300 the choices are few.
Canon's kit lens, EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM. Very cheap build (it's only $140) but pretty decent optics, and a better choice than the even cheaper Sigma 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 DC.
or
Sigma 18-125 f/3.5-5.6 DC ~$275

After that, better lenses (better build, faster maximum apertures, sharper optics, image stabilization, longer zoom range, ...) exceed your $300 limit.
Sigma 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 DC ~$380
Tamron 18-200 f/3.5-6.3 XR DI II ~$390
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro ~$390
Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 EX DC ~410
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 XR Di II ~$450
Canon EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM ~$500
and then a big price jump to the new
Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM ~$1180
