Photography Question

Tony Peckman

How much sharpening on portrait?

I've been to seminars that say "don't sharpen at all". I haven't done print tests, but wonder how much sharpening (PS filter settings) is sufficient for head shot - 3/4 portaits.
Is the Clarify med or lite enough (as far as sharpening goes) for a good print?
Is there more importance on whether it will be a 4x6 up to an 8x10 or larger?
What are the BASIC steps (or actions) you do for a senior portrait?

Everything I've read says every digital image needs sharpening. That being said, the Undsharp Mask is a filter, un-natural, and an adder. Therefore, it's in the mind of the beholder.

I start off with Amount 124%, Radius 1.4 and Threshold 0. Thes are Starting points - you must be comfortable with the results.

  "Nothing in photography is absolute."

It depends on what you want. If you want a sharp photo, sharpen it. If you want a soft photo, soften it. Just envision the type of photo you want, shoot it, and post-process it. There's no certain answer saying to sharpen or not, it's all in your mind and your vision.

"dont sharpen at all" is wrong as an overall rule. Otherwise it does depend on print size, original photo quality and desired effect - as Justin said there are no absolutes, you have to play it by ear.

For seniors where thay might not want every sign of aging in crystal clear focus a more advanced technique might be to blur the photo slightly and then restore the sharpness to the eyes, nose and mouth only.

I learned a little sharpening goes a long way and you can't necessarily tell if you have sharpened too much by looking at the monitor. I know this isn't much help, but I just wanted to caution you not to use too much until you have an idea how your images will print.

You're all what I needed to hear.
Jane, I meant high school seniors, not older people, but I hear ya.

Sharon, I finally today sent the same file with different sharpening settings and no sharpening at all. Should have done it ages ago. I will see from those prints what I feel good with.

I did try one sharpening that's mentioned on CAnon's site: 300%/0.3/0 settings.

LOL, I've still got some cultural adjustments to do - those type of seniors have other skin issues they might want blurring :-)
