Outdoor Flash

Hey everyone,

I have a question. When I am shooting portraits outdoors, although the light is adequate, I still use flash. One of the problems that I have been facing is that my pictures (especially the person) seem to get washed out quite easily. I have tried turning exposure values down as well as flash power down... These methods sometime work however not always. Can someone reccomend general flash/camera settings to use outdoors or tell me a few secrets?

Thank you for those suggestions. I guess another concern is if I am metering incorrectly outside. Many times, when I take a picture of a person and meter on them, the sky in the background comes out completely white. How do I avoid that?
